Unhappy

Hi,

checking my tyre pressures this morning i found a beautiful and enormous nail buried into the side wall of my offside front tyre. big time p****ed off.

Had it checked out to confirm my fears that it couldn't be repaired and the guy who inspected it told me that both the front tyres need replacing anyway. 5mm center 2mm sides at the front. 5mm all round on the back.
Now this is a MY99 car with 4000 miles on the clock. i haven't even had my first 6 month service yet.
So am i driving too hard or could this be a geometry problem?

Also i was quoted £165 each for 205 50 16 Bridgestones and £135 each for 205 50 16 Pirelli p zeros. should i take the pirellis and change all four, or is it safe to replace front 2 bridgestones?

Need help please,

SteveM

I'd say it's certainly worth having the geometry checked out (and adjusted if necessary). 4000 miles is not very much at all, especially if they're the factory (hard wearing) tyres.

If they've worn to 2mm on both inside and outer edges at the front, then chances are your tyres aren't inflated enough. If they've worn on only one side (i.e. inside edges) then it's probably the geometry.

If you do go ahead and replace them (seems a shame to replace the rears as 5mm is very much alright), I'm pretty sure you can get a decent set of tyres a lot cheaper than you've been quoted for... shop around. On 16's, Toyos have a good reputation and from what I understand are under £100 each.

Steve,
I'm in the same boat except it's just my front passenger side which has worn. The guy in the tyre place has swapped it with the rear drivers side . He says I'll get a couple of thousand more miles that way. I got a quote of £118 for 17inch P zeros. So shop around. When I mentioned Toyos he said they're nothing like as good as pirellis. Good luck

DAVE,

I think you better check what you've just mentioned. The tyres are directional and unless the tyres where taken off the rims and swicted around you'll now have them the wrong way round. I have no idea what this will do to your dry handling, but I can guess that if you have any rain (and it's due today in bucket loads) then you could find yourself in trouble. It's easy to check the tyres have directional arrows on the side walls.

Julian.

Julian, I thought of that. P zeros are mutidirectional. They have internal and external marked on them and as long as trhgat stays correct, no problem.

Aren't there two versions of P-Zero, Symmetrico and Asymetrico or something? I kinda figured one of those was directional and the other wasn't. Could easily be wrong though.

I got four P-Zeros (205 50 16) for £100+VAT, including valves and balancing from Coleman Tyres in Otley, Yorkshire. The boss there Les runs an Impreza himself.

I had 14000 out of my original Bridgestones and 15000 from the first set of P-Zeros. (MY98 car)

I too am in need of 4 new tyres after 14,000 miles and was quoted an all inclusive £430 for 205 50 16 ZR Bridgestone SO2 PPs by NTS in St John's Road, Edinburgh earlier today. This is apparently a special price for SIDC members, as previously intimated by JohnS, and is the cheapest I have been able to find for SO2 PPs. I plan to get them fitted on Saturday .

Has anyone managed to find them cheaper elsewhere?

Regards,

Ian

John, 16" wheels have been standard for a few years now. 17" wheels are standard on the RB5 & an official Subaru (Prodrive) option on everything else.
