Slicks
#2
Mark, hard to get sound advice on this topic isn't it!
I'm off tomorrow to get a set of Max Sport RB5 remoulds for the car! (www.maxsport-competition-tyres.co.uk)
They do 16's very soft for hill climbs/sprints in 16 x 205 x 50 I so know they will fit and not catch anywhere. They are £52 each. The grade of Avons for hills etc in 17's are medium compound, are not the right things and cost £170 each!!!!!!!
Running 17's you will find your chioce severely restricted. Good bet is the moulded slick from Kumho, but in 17's they have 3 sizes I think equating to about 225 x 40 x 17.
I think they are about £120 each.
I bulk at £800 a set of Avons, and will give the Maxsports a go at £250 a set. Red there seems to understand hills/sprinting. Will let you know how I get on tomorrow night if you wish.
They offer a discount on 4 or more tyres, and will post them out. They are based in mid Wales so easy for me to get to them.
Regards, Graham.

Please if you could, any advice appreciated
Been offered some Elise slicks for £145 delivered, but worried they may be to hard. But then again an Elise is half the weight of a Impreza

Mark, I was offered the Elise tyre too. I know AVON did the design for 2 high profile (ie fast) people for the hills in the right compound but only in 16's not 17's. They have re-enforced side walls, BUT, the 2 cars running them (other was an Escort Cossie) ran on the hills in 1997 and 2001! You could expect the tyres to be made then, and not last month.....At £170 all in, each, I would expect 100% quality.
I now have 4 nice sticky remoulds, sounds bad doesn't it?
We were taken around the new factory in Wales which employs about 12 people. It has just been accedited with the EnISO 9001 quality standard. (etc)
Anyway, total cost fitted, not balanced, was £244 the 4. Balancing cost me just £22 due to my secondhand rims being just that....oval! All is well now.
I had the RB5 (!) style in Blue, the softest compound available. There is another very demon compound in testing at this moment! Also, there is another Scooby sprinting on the RB5 tyre down south.
Test day in 3 weeks time will give me 8 hillclimbs, so that should scrub them in well.
Another point is the RB5 is ROAD LEGAL, so you could drive there and back on them. They are fully E marked. They also use matched carcases which are NOT off the scrap yards. Thus you could have 4 tyres moulded on Radial Goodyear, Avon, etc carcases, not a mixture of each!
Time will tell, but at £250 a set you can afford to be 'wrong' once.

I noticed you sold them straight away; were they no good?
Am interested in a set of RB5s for trackday use.

I don't do hill climbs but I picked up a set of Pirelli RS5 17' asphalt which I intend to use for trackdays for just over £100 for 4 (ebay). They fit well on 17x7 if perhaps just a little skinny. Used them once on the roads and the grip and stiffness are noticeable straight away. They are the hardest compound so I don't know how suitable they are for hill climbing or how you would warm them up. They do get warm/hot quickly however.
