In the process of getting a new set of alloys etc, and have the choice of tyre to make, what do you recommend? Need good dry grip and also good in the wet too (have std Dunlop 9000 SP's) which I've been happy with in the dry, alittle down in the wet, but overall a good tyre.

Anyone recommend any recent good tyre reviews in the mags?

Happy Christmas to all too!

cheers

Tin

not avon zz1

read about them in the forum and found out why the back end kept moving out round slow tight corners.

think i will change to goodyear f1 as posted, seem to get the best views.

Cool

Yup, F1's all the way. I've tried both 205 50 16 & 215 40 17 on the scoob and they're fantastic in both wet and dry conditions. Even got them on the pug (195 50 15)

The F1's are out of stock everywhere as far as I can tell. Any other suggestions?

I'm on Toyo T1-S right now but haven't been at all impressed by the wet grip level and definitely want to try something else this time. How are the Dunlops?

Avon ZZ3's are great, them Toyo things are dangerous in damp/wet conditions.Goodyear F1's are also pretty good but pricey against the Avon ZZ3's.

Try them you wont be dissapointed.

Unhappy

I used to swear by the toyos when I had my VR6, they were excellent, wet or dry. Went through 4 sets!! However, last week I picked up a MY99 with toyos on so I was pretty happy...
...until I got on a damp road when I felt a surge of brown adrenaline ready to rush out of my pants as I went round a roundabout and the car just let go and went sliding towards the verge momentarily. I have been a little more cautious on damp roads since then. Gimme some Eagle F1's!!!

I had the F1 GSD3's on the STI, the wear rate on the outside edges is horrendous. Was told by the dealer that the coppers swap them out every 4K.

The ZZ3's are a good tyre for a very reasonable price. I've just had them fitted to both the STi's. First 2K miles impression is that they are as good as the Toyo in the dry and better in the wet.

Impressed.

You could also try ZZ3's on the fronts and ZZ1's on the rears, a perfect way to powerslide heaven.

[Disclaimer] Maybe not

Yes, but then again you're on Scooby Island, where 4k isn't bad for any set of tyres - right?

Got F1 GSD3S because of all the hype on here about them. Afterwards the car wallowed on cornering, nasty jelly like things I'd never have them again. It will be pzero neros or possibly Avon ZZ3s next time round if i can see a few more positive reports on the buggers,

Currymonster,

I know what you mean. I was a bit concerned with the soft sidewalls of the Goodyear F1's.

The Avon's are holding up very well with the current manx wet season, most impressed.

Recent comments of soft sidewalls on F1s seem at odds with other reports. Just proves there are many differing opinions around. I have just reshod with F1s having only had stock Potenzas before which tramlined badly later in life, hey but they did get 16K miles (not a hard life though). A tyre specialist friend recommended that I try Yokohamas which he had tested on track. They should be cheaper than F1s too.

Amazing how much the experiences of Toyo T1-S, F1s and ZZ3s vary.

I had the latest F1s (gsd3 as opposed to gsd2 or similar) and spending 20% of my day on Milton Keynes dual carriageways and roundabouts flat out and the remaining 80% down winding country lanes, I found that the F1 sidewalls went bald in no time, back and front before and after 4wheel alignment. Grip in the wet and dry however was excellent.

I tried ZZ3s under the same conditions. Side walls were stronger and they did not go bald on the edges, grip in the dry was great and wet was only just acceptible, however, having them on the rear lead to tram lining and made sharp 100mph plus over takes as dangerous as hell, had to pull out nice and smooth and well in advance to get past this.

The T1-S had both strong sidewalls, good wet and dry grip (better than ZZ3 but not quite as good as the F1s). They have lasted well too.

In my opinion, driving flat out everywhere, under the conditions I have given above, the F1s are the best for grip as long as you keep replacing them every 5000 miles and are happy to get rid of a tyre with balding sidewalls and plenty of tread elsewhere.

The T1-S are my choice as I'v done over 5k now and they have
worn evenly and they can be ordered on-line as cheap as hell.

Before getting the T1-S I read every post with tyres in the title, all reviews on the three tyres mentioned above that I could find on this site and a review in auto express or evo magazine.

The T1-S seemed to be the most popular choice (at the time), closely followed by the F1...

I know what you mean about reports varying. I've not been able to try the F1's yet (they're out of stock everywhere), but I've just switched from T1-S to ZZ3 and found:

- both tyres perfectly OK in the dry
- in the wet, the T1-S breaks away smoothly and progressively, but far earlier than I'd have expected. They really didn't inspire too much confidence on a wet, bumpy B-road; although they're OK if pressing on smoothly, they didn't have a lot of grip in reserve for emergencies. One errant deer or pheasant and I'd have been in the trees. The ZZ3's seem much grippier, I've not had any 'moments' yet since they've been scrubbed in.
- The T1-S gives a much more comfortable ride. With the ZZ3's (215/40/17 on my MY00), the world seems an awfully bumpy place.
- Neither tyre has the comfort and grip of my old set of Bridgestone S-02PP's, but sadly they're no longer available and the S-03 is a different tyre entirely.

T1-S seem good in the wet and dry to me. Maybe not that greasy, slimey sort of damp you occasionally come across but not sure any tyre is that great there. Best thing is how correctable and progressive the car is - I find I actually drive faster because I know if I exceed thae limit a bit I'll be able to sort it out with my fairly amateur levels of skill without ending upside down in a hedge. The bridgestones I used to have were all or nothing gripwise - used to scare me off the limits to be honest.

Anyone tried Pirelli Pzero Rosso's?

Got a very good review in Autocar magazine about 10 months ago on both an M3 and a Mondeo.
