Best tyres - especially in wet
#1
As we live in UK and it's always P155ing it down.
Got P1 with whats left of Pirelli P zero's on it, need tyres now. So far been told that the best are; Goodyear eagle F1, or Toyo T1-s, or should we stick with Pirelli P zeros?

Sounds good to me that you trust them enough to be your third set
You must have had the car for years!
Do you know how much they are, the cheapest price I could get for P zeros was £115 each inc balancing.

That's a good price for P Zero's.
Eagles will prob feel a bit odd after the PZN's as they have softer tyre walls, I certainly noticed it after changing from Toyo's.
But a bit of tyre wall roll aside the F1's corner well in the wet or dry, and are wearing well too. I've had 15k so far from the current set and still got a few thousand left in them yet.
I think typically you can get the F1's for something like £90 each if you hunt round but typically they're more like £100+ each, which is why I say the PZN's are a good price. I got quoted £140 each for PZN's and £110 for Toyo's.

I've had 18K out of a set of Toyo's before now and that was on a 380bhp Evo VII, they do wear well.
I'm trying Goodyear's as well next time round (or SO2's if I can get my hands on them).

IMHO Bridgestone SO2s were the best wet tyre. Unfortunately Bridgestone stopped making them a couple of years ago. I am now on my second set of Toyo Proxes T1-S. They are not quite as grippy as the SO2s, but there is not much in it. They do wear well. The last set lasted 2x as long as the Bridgestones.
As for price I have just paid £71-50 per tyre delivered to my door from
http://www.mytyres.co.uk
Then I got them fitted and balanced for £8 each. You will be hard pushed to get them cheaper than that.

Once scrubbed in SO-3's (had 16" on my Terzo) were an amazing tyre in the wet.
Good in the dry but did wear quite quick or was that just my driving style?
Just under £100.00 all in per corner.

Good in the dry don't trust them at all in the wet..... I shall be going down the F1 or Toyo route next.

FWIIW - had Goodyear Eagle F1's on my 206 GTi, brilliant in the dry scary as **** in the wet. Fart on the gas in the wet and the wheels were spinning, even on the straight in 1st and 2nd, corners just too scary.

I'm on my first set of F1 GSD3's and IMO they are a much better tyre than the SO3's supplied with the car. My SO3's lasted 15k before one blew out on the motorway, and they suffered really bad tramlining. The F1's are brilliant though, especially in the wet and to me seem the ideal tyre for UK roads. All IMO of course based on limited experience ...

On my previous car (Clio Sport) I used Goodyear Eagle F1's (wore far too quickly, but were fantastic in the dry), then tried a couple of sets of Toyo T1-S's (they were a pretty good tyre, but not as grippy as some), then the dealer recommended the Yokohama AVS Sport (which were not quite as good in the dry as the F1's, but lasted me much longer).
I have only just had my scooby 2 weeks (MY03 WRX), and to be honest the standard fit tyres seem to work tremendously in all weather (but that is probably more to do with the 4wd).
On the Clio next I was going to go for the Michelin Pilot Sports, some Pirelli PZN, or just stick with the Yoko's.... has anyone tried these on an Impreza?
(Everyone seems to love the F1's, but after demolishing a set in about 4000miles, I do not really care for them much!)

Don't forget that the FWD Clio will be a lot harder on the front set than the AWD scoob, so making tyre comparisons between FWD and AWD may not be the best way to decide.
Also I'm sure your opinion on the OE tyres will change once you have 10-12k on them, mine certainly did !

In this years tyre tests carried out by EVO and Autocar magazines the recommended tyres were:
EVO - Pirelli Zero Nero
Autocar - Pirelli Zero Rosso
I think Autocar also liked the Goodyear F1s, but the Pirellis were better in the wet.
Anyone know the difference between Nero and Rosso tyres?

On STi 6 Wagon:
SO2; very good.
F1 GDS3:very good and exceptional in the wet. Had two sent back under complaint for split sidewall. 40% allowance. Sidewall is soft and can wear on the edge of the tyre (side) beyond the tread.
Good enough in the wet to be on my second set. Not lasted as long as SO2s
Kumo: Not very good in the wet but only done 200mls to date but for £230 inc vat inc balance inc valves they were cheap.
All the above are 215 x 40 x ZR 17 Hope they improve with a few more miles.
Toyo Proxies. 215 x 35 x ZR 18. Very good in the wet and almost as good as the more expensive Goodyear F1s.
