Ive just replaced my standard 16's to STI8 17's with 225/45/17's but have found the rears rub over speed bumps or with rear passengers.

Has anyone else fitted this wheel to their classic and what size tyres did you fit? Do i need to lower the width of tyre or the profile? or both?

You need 40 profile tyres.

Preferably 215/40/17's, they'll fit just nicely and no rubbing regardless of make.

Thanks for the link, according to that, 225/40/17's should be almost identical to 205/50/16 but what i dont understand is...

How does changing the width (ie 205, 215, 225) effect the diameter? I thought the profile (40, 45, 50) and wheel size (16", 17") combined are the only things that can effect the overall diameter

Looking at where its rubbing i think going to a 215/40/17 would be my best option, what do you guys think, has anyone done this?

Dear Boro,

The width does affect the overall diameter as the profile is the % of the width that will be the sidewall. Therefore a 205/50/16 has more sidewall(& diameter) than a 205/40/16.

As Ian says the sidewall measurement is a %age and not fixed like the width.

try this which gives an indication of the speedo readings when changing tyres.

Best bet is to take some advice from classic owners, looks like Blue Boy may have some experience. You'll probably get some more replies during the week.

I only know from experience as I've had the 225/35/18's on the P1 which rubbed and took them off to put 215/35/18's on and everything was fine (thankfully the wheels were on loan so no cash parted there).

This is also the recommendation from the garage's, as I was looking to sell my new 17" wheels on the STi8 and putting them on a classic and the opinions were all to get 215 and not 225 (/40/17) - with the 225/45's going nowhere near.

It's all to do with the sidewall and reinforcement of it on some tyres (so if your happy with the likes of Pirelli, then you can get hold of 225's and they'll fit - but then you've got to face the fact that you've got the Pirelli's on there).

may be too late but http:\\www.blackcircles.com are doing Toyo T1s 215/40/17 at £84 delivered (but not fitted) at the moment.

Opted for Goodyear F1 GSD03's 215/40/17, from Kwik Fit, £85 (fitted, balanced, vales, VAT)

Toyo Proxes T1S 215/40/17's are only £74.10 delivered from www.mytyres.co.uk but F1's at that price FITTED locally was a bargain.
