Anyone running sticky Kumho's?????
#1
Has anyone gor the motorsport Kumho's on their Impreza?
I run the Toyo's at present and hill climb on them too, good tyre, but need more grip and still be road legal.
Considering Kumho on 17's, Vecta series of tyre. Any thoughts?
Graham.

Tried some Ecsta V700 (IIRC, the e marked moulded slicks) on mine (a Skoda) much better than road tyres, not as good as the P Zero Corsas, but then they are 1/2 the price. Think they were about £100 per tyre. I quite liked them.
IIRC the blue book specifies what tyres are allowed and I don't think any of these type are on the list, assuming you are running in an unmodded class.

Thanks for coming back and understanding my bad spelling!
The Championship I hill climb in allows any tyre, and I'm avioding Avon slicks as I doubt my standaard gearbox will take the start line shock.
The Toyo's are good, but fellow competitors are all fitting Avon's to their 400bhp EVOs and Audi Quattro's so I need to improve things. I drive the car to and from the events, so the Kumhos seem a good choice. What softness did you run? Also, any ideas on how many miles will they do? I need about 4000 miles 'range' from the tyres.
I appreciate your help, Regards, Graham.

Thanks for the info. Don't want to go to Avon slicks due to risk to gearbox! I can run any tyre in my Championship, but I drive the car to the hillclibs and back so need a tyre with much better grip and road durable for about 4000 miles, that's enough.
Appreciate your input, and any other thoughts are most welcome.

4,000 miles? Best I got out of a set of these road legal slicks (thats what they are really) was about 3k when combining road and track usage. The higher the proportion of road driving the better they will last. You will probably be OK a sprints and hill climbs are fairly easy on tyres compared to full on track use. Yeah, I ran them slightly softer than normal on track, normal pressures on the road

Sounds good as the hillclimbs are only 1 mile long and about 10 bends at most with 3 hard braking points, hardly a blast around Donnington!
I only do about 12 events each year.
One last question and i'll stop bugging you; do you know the wear rate number and traction rating of the Kumho's?
The toyo's are 120 and Traction AA, same as the wonderfull Bridgestone SO2 Pole Positions.

traction ratings are based on straight line wet braking, just in case you might think the toyos are as grippy as the Kuhmo semi slicks!
I would try the softest compound for hillclimb as you won't have any time to get heat into tyres.

It is great to email others who understand Hill climbing! Funny kind of sport, all about precision and getting it right first time.
Take your point about the heat in the tyres and the rating numbers, they are all just a bit of a guide in the end. recently I was only 0.8 sec behind a 340bhp Cossie on slicks on the local Loton Park hill climb which is run in about 60 seconds. This was on toyos in the STi, not too bad. This is why I think Kumho's might be the right ticket to getting on equal terms but without the strain on the transmission that slicks cause.
