Read in a recent article that police forces have found that when checked 75% of tyre pressures were wrong. This can lead to problems affecting handling, braking and fuel consumption.

Checked mine this morning and yep they were about 3psi out.

I know its stating the obvious but its something we all tend to overlook, so if youve got a minute check your pressures.

Chip.

When you say 3psi out, what are you using as a reference? I thought tyre pressures where a matter of personal preference. Some drivers swear 34/32 front/rear gives best handling whereas others might prefer 30 all round.

Depends on the time of day you check to. Ambient Temp affects readings

And whether or not the car has just been driven.

I do agree we should all check our cars over on a regular basis but I challenge anybody here to be able to tell the diffrence, just by driving, the difference between 30 and 33 psi in one tyre!

I've always found Subaru's very sensitive to tyre pressure changes and can easily notice 0.5psi differnece form my favoured settings.

Should be checked weekly anyway. I dunno about 0.5 psi,
but 2 definitely feel a difference.
Bob.T you can .
I use 32 front 30 rear, if i was on 29..27 its easily noticeable.
IMHO

Must go with general opinion. 2 psi out on the front and it's understeer party and everyone's invited.

I've got Eibachs on my MY02 and wondered if I needed to alter the pressures on my standard 17" Potenza 02's ??

I can also feel a .5 psi difference so I treated myself to this race spec tyre pressure gauge with .1 increments - the consumer ones are not very accurate.

Can't the BBS to create automatitic hyperlinks anymore.

I had a digital gauge for christmas, it says acurate to 0.2 psi.

I would say I start to notice a difference with only 1 or 2psi difference.

Thing is you can set the pressure on a cold morning before work and set them to 32psi, before coming home from work check them again when its warm and they can be 34psi.

My neighbour opposite, always checks his tire pressures every sunday, he has to change them alomost every time LOL!

Basically , he uses a sh1tty gauge on his footpump, combine that with ambiant temperature, and that he's just driven to the shops for something and the're always going to be wrong

Metro man at his best I think

Use a good gauge (buy your own), always use the same one (don't use petrol station ones, as the calibration can be way off). Always check cold, and every few weeks at least, or when your going on a long journey, tire looks flat or the handling is "off".

If after following the above you need to add more than 5psi on a regular basis, then you may have a puncture or dodgy valve.

as for specific pressures, personal preference As long as they are the same on the both sides of each axle and not below manufacturer's reccomended minimum.

I have to say that I check my tyres every week now(215-35-18). I found that my nearside rear was around 19psi and offside front around 21psi, whilst the other tyres were 28-30psi.

Checked mine with a calibrated digital pressure gauge that I use for work so I know its accurate. Measures in mbar, pascals and psi.

I found out how important checking your pressures can be, the hard way! I had four new tyres fitted about 9 months ago, and never thought for one min that i would need to check them (stupid i know)
Last week i had to replace the front two as they had been running at 22psi for the last 6000 miles and had totally shot the outside edges.

You live and learn and now i check them every week!
