Ok,
I dont want to go to bigger wheels really, so what size disk + bell can I get inside the 16" MY00 Wheel..
I dont really want to spend silly money ie < £1000 but I need to cope with 3 times std power ideally

I've been thinking about this for a while..... what would the 4 pot brakes be 'rated' to? I know this is a bit of a weird question and difficult to rate a brake wrt horse power. Obviously Subaru feel they can cope with 280Ps but if uprated discs and pads are added would people be happy running these with a car that has 350bhp????
Bit more difficult for you David if you want to keep the 16"s, i have the fairly cheap option of the Godspeed 335mm kit with the Subaru 4 pots. The problem with these is i don't like how the pads 'hang' out the bottom of the caliper.... couldn't a disk be used that has a samller surface (i.e larger inner diameter with a lrager diameter bell) so the stndard pads could be used???
I noticed Andy F had wilwoods with his 16"s, he seemed to be happy with them. Not a bad price from Rally Design either. They do some now with dust seals but to be honest this is more a scoobynet hear say problem than anything else.... i'd happly run without dust seals but give them a wash down in winter when the gritters are out. Then again mybe im a fool .

Tony , I could supply the 335mm discs with a narrower pad area to use the smaller standard shape pads but as the pads are a lot smaller it rather defeats the point of putting them on in the first place . although as you say it would look neater if the pads couldn't be seen . Cheers Ian

Also to add what about Ian's 308mm kit David? Seems to get good write ups from most people.... with track use too. Under £600 too... i think? My bro-in-law has the 325mm kit and seems happy with it. The calipers aren't the prettiest (im know im a tart ) but i believe that Ian now (or was going to) supply Godspeed stickers to go on them.

If you want AP calipers and keep it below £1000... Godspeed do a kit with Brembo or AP calipers with his discs and bells. Im sure last time i looked it was about £1000, the brembos being £100 cheaper.

eeermm yeah HI-Spec (had a sense of humour failure with them some time ago!!!!).
IMHO AP disks are one the best you can buy. Just look at the castings compared to others.....with the 304mm disks you will build a fair bit of heat (more than the 330) although less than in some of the aftermarket kits of the same size.....so I think a decent caliper is therefore also required. As you go up in size on the disk, heat becomes (slightly) less of an issue and a less `capable` caliper may be up to the job.....all IMHO....running the AP 4-pot kit with 304disks. The 330`s must be mental to top the smaller set-up......

Making your own kit with Wilwood calipers might be good. I was going to do it a while ago and got put off by some out of date crap.
Andy F has done this, and thinks they are pretty damn good.
Another option is to use hispec calipers with wilwood discs and bells (sorry I think the hi-spec discs are crap).
I think you can make an all wilwood kit for about £600 all in (no pads though) using 309.6 diameter by 31.8 thick 48 vane discs.
Or for an extra £250 or so you could get Hispec 4 pots calipers and ready made mounting brackets. The pads will fit nicely on the wilwood disc, not about clearance width wise on those.
The wilwoods don't have any dust seals on the calipers, whereas the Hi-spec do. but Andy has had no problems with his, and it's not difficult to take a caliper off to clean under the pads once a while.
I am seriously thinking of going the wilwood route, and if I don't like the calipers when I change the pads the next time, I'll get new calipers.

Have you seen the new rally design catalogue. The new wilwood superlite (4 pots) now have dust seals. Although i agree that the lack off them isn't a big problem. Some people on here would disagree strongly tho.... but from what i've seen have no personal experience of them . I looked at the seperate prices while at the autosport show and you could put a very good kit together for nor much dosh. I also looked at their 2 pot rear (cos im a tart).... pity it only accepts no vented discs tho .

tony are these the same superlite that they advertise in ccc for about £850 to fit under 17inch wheels? this is the setup i`m interested as it falls into my price braket. i was put off that they did`nt have dust seals as i`m not into diy(might get my hands dirty)

The calipers with the dust seals are limited to 24mm disc thickness. Although they do a new forged superlight caliper with bridge bolt as standard.
It may be possible to buy the sealed pistons and stuff and fit them to the Superlight Caliper. But at £99.95 +vat each for the (cast) calipers, it's not a major deal if you have to replace one.
Anyone serious about their braking, but not wanting to spend loads could probably clean the calipers once every 6months/year.
I'm not impressed with the Wilwood kit to go uner 17" wheels, mainly because it uses their worst discs. I don't know why they are not specced with racing spec curved vane discs.
The other nice thing about wilwood discs is they are less than 1/2 the price of an equivalent AP disc, but don't be fooled into thinking they are poor quality discs.

Thats about £600 plus the vat!!!!
If you kept it down to suit 16" wheels the rotors are only £42.50 (309.6x20.6). The Superlite 11A calipers (same mount holes as forged) are only £99.50. Bargain!
I certainly agree about the dust seals.... just give them a clean now and again and they should be ok.

paul, so as far as cleaning the calipers i could leave that to my mechanic to do it when he services the car, as it only gets done every 6 month(don`t do many miles).

The equivalent with dust seals is a Hi-Spec caliper. Although it may be possible to buy the pistons and seals for the wilwood Midilite caliper as spare parts and fit them to the superlight.
However, cleaning the calipers every 6 months on a car with little use should be adequate.
