Erm, 215/45/17s ok on 205/45/17 rims?
#1
Guy was supposed to fit 215/40/17s on my P1 rims which are 205/45.
However, he didnt and when i pulled him on it he said that what i had told him and he had ordered only those in for me.
In short, he got it wrong but i had driven 70 miles to get the tyres at a good price.
Will it matter? Will anything be affected?

I got 215/40/17's put on today instead of my old 205/45/17's. Guys at tyre place said it may put speedo out as profile is slightly smaller (will make speedo slower I assume which is good). Can see the extra width on the rim which should make it harder to scratch the rims than with 205's. Will rack up a few hundred miles on these before I start pushing them.

I think there is some confusion here. Am i right in assuming that your car has been fitted with 215/45/17? If this is the case i cant see any real problem. If i was in your position however, i would have told the bloke to get the right tyres, regardless of the distance you travelled.

Depending on what shape car you have (classic or bug eye) then if your running 215/45/17 on a classic your running the wrong size tyres (they should be 215/40/17) but on a bug those tyres are ok (215/45/17)
Hope that helps

I thought 215/45 on a classic would give you 'rubbing' issues whereas as Tony has put 215/40 are the correct fitment....?

According to Andy W's link changing from default Pirelli 205/45 to 215/40's means your speedo is out by up to 2% too much which is good as your doing less than what your speedo tells you.

The 215/45s are on my P1, they are not rubbing but i am keen to learn what implications they have over the 205/45 the car came with. (The tyre bloke was supposed to be fitting 215/40s as advised this was best)

Chris Id see about getting them swapped as your 215/45's are gonna make your speedo show slower speeds than what you are actually doing - not what you want really. 215/40 is the way to go!
