Just had a nail taken out from the middle of my front tyre and a repair made. Seems to consist of rubber plug in the hole. Car seems to be fine and it holding pressure but I was wondering if this is a safe repair given the type of use the car will get. What I'm trying to say is I don't want said plug to go walkabout on a 90mph tight bend as that could get tricky!!

I believe that certain tyres can only have a certain number of repairs. This is dependant on where the repair is as well. Too close to the sidewall, and it can't be done.
IIRC this is 1 repair for a "Z" rated (or whatever it is now) tyre.
I lost a 6 month old tyre due to this , but better safe than falling off the road at 90, as you said...
Also had another repaired (the same thing as you - a nail in the centre) Was never a problem, but I was warned not to do it again, as there a second repair wasn't allowed...

When I lived in a construction area for a bit had 4 nail punctures repaired on one tyre and it never missed a beat or lost pressure. Granted I never did over 70 mph with the car but I honestly don't think it would have been an issue. Nail / hole repairs are ok, any sort of rip or tear and I would replace the tyre.

Saxo Boy,
The construction of a modern tyre is a complex weave of fibres etc damage those and you stress the tyre in ways it wasn't designed for. The sidewall takes the most strain and plugs aren't allowed in this area the road bearing area ie the bit with tread on isn't flexed as much but at the speeds a scooby is capable of it is not something I would like to bet on. All mechanical things have a built in safety margin but you must be entering the unknown here as you don't know the extent of the damage done. The tyres IMHO are easily the most stressed part of any car and they do an amazing job but you do see an awful lot of rubber on the side of motorways these days. I would be careful thats all..

SB,
I had 2 of my original Pirelli P-Zero's repaired and did 25K on them without any probs. I've even just had one of my Eagle F1's repaired.
If the sidewall is damaged, then bin the tyre. It's that part which takes all the stress under cornering. Personally I have no probs with repaired tyres as long as it's in the middle and from something like a nail.
If you do find yerself with a flat mid-bend, don't panic. The car will still be controllable with a reasonably slow puncture.
Anyway, your wheel's more likely to fall off due to the mechanic not tightening the nuts properly rather than the repair letting go
