I have just had a set of Black Diamond grooved and drilled disc's fitted complete with Green Stuff pad's all round. They stop well but, when medium to heavy braking they emit an audible 'rumble' and cause some steering vibration/ shake.
I have checked everthing I can think of including run-out which is less than a thou.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sometimes it can be felt through the pedal. The noise/ vibration is speed related and perhaps brake temperature related. I have noticed curious irregular patches of 'burning' or discoloration of the middle friction area of the disc's. Looks like I might need to try a different brake lining compound. More expense!

Matt, I found the Subaru discs better on the track - at least they didn't crack

The vibration/noise can be caused by the grooves in the disc, the harder you brake the more noticable this is.......

Question

Why are yiou using "Greenstuff"? Demon Tweeks 2002 catalogue says that Black Diamond recommend "Redstuff" for Impreza's anyway.

They were fitted as during the disc change by Power engineering.
It was all a bit spur of the moment, normally I would do this myself and do a little more research.
Red Stuff are 'harder compound are they not? This would effect slow speed 'cold' braking performance, no?

Any further suggestions please, thanks for your help so far.

Thumbs down

If you can feel the vibration through the steering wheel then get it fixed pronto. The steering rack doesn't like being forced at high frequency in the opposite direction (from the steering wheel).

Run out was checked using a dial test indicator (DTI) with the measuring pointer as near to the outer edge of the disc as possible and yet on the friction area. This then measures deviation either side of the zero set point as the wheel and disc are rotated. I measured no more than 25 micron's = 1 thou = 1000th of an inch.

This problem does seem related to the pad material although I will confirm when I change to Mintex or EBC Red Stuff.
The disc's are showing patches of 'blueing' in the centre of the friction area.

Any more ideas folks?

Suspect pads first, then discs.

Don't fit cheap brakes on a 150mph car.

Use quality discs (grooved only) with alloy bells, plus Mintex, Ferodo or Pagid pads. There are a few other good combinations, but not many.

Good luck

Richard.
