Best 215 / 40 / ZR17 Tyres

All,
My Toyos are just about to need replacing, and was wondering what tyres to buy next as they are crap IMHO.
On my MY00 I had SO2s (16s) that were fantastic tyres (wet and dry) when they needed replacing following a puncture I had no alternative but to fit SO3s. They were good, but not as good as the SO2s.
What tyres do I got for next ?
Cheers Phill C

I'm just about to replace SO2 PPs with Proxes T1-S. What was it you didnt you like them? They did weel in the Evo test and they seem to be a sight cheaper than the other contenders.

Theu seem to follow all the groves and white lines in the road. They aren't that good in the wet or dry. Under braking the car doesn't seem to bad, RE010 were complete pants!!!
SO2s rule as far as I'm concerned, although you can't get them anymore

Babber,
Suprised you didnt like the Toyo's, I had them on before I was lucky enough to get a set of S02PP's, but I don't think that the Bridgestone are 'that' much better imho.

TBMeech,
I haven't been that impressed with the Toyo's at all and am surprised you say that. I did three sets of SO2s and think they are great wet and dry weather.
So would you go for Toyo's again then ? What tyre pressure did you use on them ? I found 34 PSi fronts and 30 PSi rear did the trick. I was amazed at the difference tyre pressure made

I guess this tyre business is all very subjective as its very hard for a human being to know what sort of lateral g they are pulling without a datalogger. As for the way they feel, you are normally replacing a knacked tyre with a new one, and the tyre will display different handling characterisitics as it wears.
When I used to race saloon cars, we used to buy the control tyre and then spend more money buffing it to 3mm depth. Any more tread than that on the track and the blocks move to much, the tyre gets too hot, the grip really goes away and often disintegrates.
I'll be replacing my SO2s with the T1Ss 2moro as they came in the post 2day and by the time Ive scrubbed them in will no doubt have forgotten what the bridgeys were like anyway. The only thing I can for sure is that they are cheap. 75 squid all up per corner!!!!!! As it looked like the SO2s were only going to be good for 5k miles, cheap performance tyres may be the way 2 go as I'm obviously going to end up replacing them alot.

Babber, I'm with you for the SO-2 fan club. Fanstastic tyres, right up to the end with the PP's and their grippier compound as the tread wears. But that's history until Bridgestone come up with a true replacement.
Surprised by your comments about Toyo. Are we talking the T-1S here? Just a thought, as these Toyos generally come up trumps on ScoobyNet, Pete Croney likes them (Mr Scoobysport = no fool) and so did the recent EVO test.
However, the same tyre in different sizes doesn't always perform the same and tyre tests like EVO's only measure new tyres. The results may not be the same when down to 2mm.
I think this is an important point as the tread pattern has a major effect on performance, especially when new and wet. Eg Uniroyal Rainsports have good wet performance due to huge drainage channels and flexible walls but that means small and flexible tread blocks which move around and are poor in the dry. Overall, I don't like them; I have a set going cheap
I should have 215/40x17 Toyos on my car, but they weren't available so opted for Goodyear F1 (old compound). Good, but not SO-2 class. I can't think that you'll get better performance than from Toyos or the new F1.
Cheers,
Richard.

Babber,
I've tried:
Bridgestone RE10's (16") - completely cack
Dunlop SP9000 (205/45 R17) - Cack in wet and dry!!! The compound is far too hard!
Toyo Proxies TS-1 - Better than the Dunlops, but still poor!
Pirelli PZero's (205/45 R17) - Great in the dry, crap in the wet!
Goodyear Eagle F1's "old" style (16") - Very impressed, much better than the Proxies & PZero's even though they were on smaller rims! Excellent in the wet and dry!
Bridgestone SO2 PP (215/40 R17) - Still my favourite tyre, amazing in the wet and excellent in the dry!
Personally if I couldn't find some SO2's, I'd get the Goodyears.
All subjective and these tyres were tried on UK MY97 and UK MY99 cars.

Keep it coming chaps
I found a couple of PSi variation made loads of difference in handling. If I ran the front and rears at 30 PSi then the car understeered like ****
What is the best tyre pressure then ? I've heard that Bridgestone are making the SO2s again, can anyone confirm this ?
Cheers Phill C

Babber,
I've had the Toyos followed by Eagle F1's followed By S02 PP's, did a track day on the Toyo's thought they gripped really well in the wet and the dry, sliding was very very progressive with them, was impressed, the Eagles were stunning in the wet imho but traded the dry performance for this, S02's again an excellent combination on wet or dry, but I wouldnt say a lot better than the Toyo's....
I run 32psi all round.
I probably would try the new Eagle F1's, but I believe they are a harder compound tyre than the Toyo...

Toyos are on and scrubbed. Initial impressions are good: Less directional stability than the SO2, similar turn in (ie. very good) and nice high grip levels. Havent really lent on them yet as I'd like to lose a few mm of tread first and dont know them as well as my sadly departed SO2s, but I'm sure that wont take long.

Planky there is a weeks delay on ordering the toyos from mytyres.net. I know somewhere that will match their price and have them in stock if you cant wait that long (cos I had to have em in a hurry).
