I'd leave it on, provided it is stone proof.

Although original might be best in terms of er... originality in terms of cost stonechips are much more expensive, not just for getting them removed (only for some civic official to decide to resurface another stretch of road on your route home) but also loss of value in the car.

And as said, if the lacquer's had it you've cost yourself money into the bargain anyway.
