Default Timing belt, opinions please.

As my car is overdue a timing belt I phoned round some garages this morning (kp's, gravells and three arches) all quoted circa £300, would normally take it to kp's but abit disappointed with them because they quoted me about £210 just a few months ago and I can't justify the price hike, so anyone got any opinions, alternatives or should I DIY it?

Is that £300 including the parts? If that's parts and labour then it's a good price (assuming they change the kit and not just the belt).

I paid £180 for the Gates cambelt kit then 3 hours labour at £30 an hour.

Make sure it's Gates, don't try to save money and have a Dayco fitted.

2 of the quotes are subaru main dealers and one private garage, prices were for just belt (as the car has low miles), labour, and inclusive of vat.

low miles or not I'd do the whole kit for piece of mind.

make sure the independent garage knows that it cannot use the original belt guide with an after market belt. an independent garage change the belt on my blobeye and didn't know this, belt had 50k or wear after a week because it was rubbing.

try a scooby specialist or buy the kit yourself online and get quotes from local garages for fitting. had 3 done on subarus and they have never taken more than 3 hours.

Regardless of miles you want a full kit & possibly a water pump. What's the point in replacing the belt for peace of mind, and then just pray none of the idlers or tensioner fail.

Did they discount anything oz? I told them where I work and they offered -10% parts and labour, bringing the total down to about £280 instead of £300 odd, but that was still about £60 more than is been quoted previously.

Jarv,

I am down Three Arches on Tuesday. I think Dan and Dean are keen to get more Scoobs through the door. The owner is getting into the full Servicing, Parts Supply/Fitting etc.

I can ask about all the pro's and con's.

Hope my contribution gets well spent .

I was talking to the owner last week when I took mine for a service. He seemed disappointed that there hadn't been more scoobs yet, so yes I agree he's very keen.

As my other thread stated, very pleased with them last week

Cheers Ian, quoted £295, not sure if genuine belt would be used.

You could also look at the gates kevlar belt. Think a cosworth belt is just one of those rebranded. Seen them for £89.

The Cosworth price is for the belt only, where as you have been probably quoted for a complete 6 piece kit (roughly £220).

Yeah you're right I've just read the thread, some of dealer prices which Ozz quoted are shocking and there two years out of date. You can buy a complete kit for £220 plus fitting.

I know that Import Car Parts do some kits but I don't think they are genuine parts as in Subaru OE, I could be wrong but I think their pattern parts.

hi guys ive just done my timing belt, i got the tensioner and belt from graham goode racing but a couple of the pullys were worn so go two smooth idlers the toothed one and the small one from import car parts and the numbers and make on them were exactly the same as the original ones i removed. import car parts seemed to be cheapest when i rang round if anyone is to try it themselves

Import Car Parts was where I was getting my prices from and everything is OE and made in the same factories in Japan which supply Subaru, so exactly the same parts minus the prices the main stealers charge!

Cheers Ian, I think what I'm gonna do is..... buy a cosworth belt, see if kp's will fit it and advise if additional parts at required, as its only done 11k I expect not.

KP's would get my vote on this one Jarv. I know there is a bit of a price hike on it since you were last quoted, but at the end of the day you'll get a nice shiny subaru stamp to go in your book, and im sure a guarantee on the workmaship.Around the £300 mark dosen't sound too bad at all too me,maybe a tad on the heavy side but again they do seem to have a very good reputatuion round here.

And as a nice little Brucie Bonus, there is a cracking burger van on the A40 just before Bwlch (if you find yourself travelling this way) which has been rated #2 in my all time Burger Van feeds.

Taking all into consideration, its a no-brainer for me.
