Default Hawkeye Head Gasket

Afternoon All!!

So I have the early signs of HGF on the scoob and I really cannot decide where to take the car to get it done. As with my first Impreza, I always had the work done at KPS and have always been more than happy with the service they provide. However, as I would want to upgrade some of the parts (Cosworth HG & head stud kit belts etc) I'm a little concerned about liability as I would need to supply the parts to them. If there's a problem they could in theory walk away!!

So i'm potentially looking to a specialist to get the work done and supply the parts but I didn't realise how many specialists there were around the South Wales area.

Anyway could anyone give me a bit of a steer as to past experience or advice on where to go, or even if I should take it to KPS.

Here's the consideration list:
  • Take it back to KPS
  • ACE Motorsport
  • Indigo GT
  • Tengudo Motorsport
  • Scooby Projects
  • Advanced Automotive
  • Engine Tuner
  • A N Other
Finally the current thinking is just to do upgrade the head gasket and head stud kit. The car is currently running 385bhp so should I be considering forged internals? Anything else that should be changed?? Want to try and avoid spending thousands if I can!!!

Thanks in advance for your input

Adam

I would use Advanced Automotive. Nick is meticulous & does a fantastic job. He will not only do a great job, but will give you the best value for money. Going forged is not going to be cheap but now is a good time to do it as your engine is going to have to come out anyway.

Can I ask what signs you are seeing that make you think that the HG is on the way out?
I only ask as I have a hawk sti & any signs to look out for re-possible future problems, can only be a good thing.

Cheers Rich

Rick

First sign was water temperature rising along with gasket paste in the coolant overflow reservoir. It appears as an oily paste in the reservoir.

A later sign is when you get air bubbles coming up through the coolant.

Hi Adam,

I think it's fair to say you're spoiled for choice which can only be a good thing!

This is certainly an area we can help you with, if you find yourself in or around the Tredegar area feel free to stop by.

Cheers for that, any kind of "heads up" advice is good advice as far as I'm concerned.
Hope your repairs go well.

its not cheap to repair head gaskets or even bottom ends, if your car is running what you say it is then it would be good for you to up rate if you have money too

gaskets
head studs
oil pump
and the list is endless depending on what you want to spend

whats the miles on the engine ?

Car has done almost 36k miles so good to have lasted so long. Speaking to a few you are right that you could spend thousands on it up-rating most parts. I'm not in search of massive power but I am considering forged pistons and conrods. Note your point about oil pump and also water pump. £££££
