if your going to buy a second hand short block your better off getting one from a scooby specialist breaker and ask for a warrenty
but then again price up buying the short block then all the labour/parts/etc needed to rebuild to a full block
then price up a full engine,
try Awesome imports in Avonmouth
good bunch of lads and cheap too

jap performance parts got a full engine v6 Sti for 2K - to give you an idea, ebay cheapest I saw was 1.5K for an engine. HTH.
I havn't seen a std WRX engine, but would guess at cheaper than the Sti ones...........

thanks for your replies, but i will be building the new engine myself as it is for a customer, i dont mind if the engine has a blown head gasket or needs new shells as long as its a good base to work with, anything will do as it will be fully overhauled with new everything for less than the cost of a new or recon, (its handy being able to do it all yourself) the last 2 i picked up turned out to be totally shot when stripped down, one had a crack in one of the liners and the other had snapped a rod which had made mincemeat of the inside of the block

make sure you buy a new crank and bearings rather than getting your crank reground and oversize bearings.
every one ive heard of thats had a reground crank has fooked up withing 10-15k miles
