Default Oil in Intercooler ???????

Hi Guy's - just did an engine oil change, and noticed a small amount of oil, which had trickled down the leading edge of the downpipe.

Oh No ! I thought - what the ****, on having a look I have noticed it's coming from the top left top of the I/C (poss through the crimps on the end tank), as you look at it

Is this impending engine doom or do ya think it's been overfilled

Si

The way the engine breaths means you get black oil in the intercooler/pipes, this is quite normal,

but it doesn't normally leak through the intercooler, you could have a whole in it which would need sorting

Thanks You're right there - it shouldn't really be coming out at the top left !! It seems to be around the end tank crimps - I will have to investigate, can the leak get fixed ???

Cheapest way to fix it is with metal putty (esp as I already have some here!). I have used it to fix a hole in a water pipe on my focus, it holds up well.

you will get oil vapour in intercooler and inlet manifold and sometimes it can cause det as it messes up the air and fueling this is why people run oil catch cans to stop it

Nothing at all to worry about Simon as all turbochargerd engines will pass a fine mist of oil into the intake system.

I would have a look at the intercooler as you seem to have sprouted a leak plus you could also start losing boost pressure as well if the leak gets worse.

Thanks Tyron - If you remember, before the AJAC R/R day, I mentioned about the car not boosting fully to 1.5 bar, as Bob had set it at that Maybe this is the culprit It does hit peak sometimes, but in gear acceleration 1 - 3rd it usually stays a bit under 1.2/1.3bar. only when I "floor it" in 4th (top gear) does it then hit the 1.5bar mark

Been checking the pipes etc and can't see a loose one anywhere

It sounds like it, mine is a 2 part putty. You slice off what you need and mix it.

You can also try calling Ricketts Radiators on the Enterprise Zone, they perform all sorts of repairs and could possible pressure test the intercooler for you.

Thanks Rich - didn't think of them, they re-cored a Classic WRX Rad for me a few years ago, would be good to get a pressure test done
