Help!! Spend now and save later or not?!?!
I have a choice of the following, which I though I would get your opinions on.
Remap my existing ECU for £400 or get a Simtek with duel maps and ALS for £1200. The Simtek should see me ok for any future mods (if I do them) but is obviously more upfront.
Opinions on a postcard!
Thanks, Rich.

I would personally go for Apexi Power FC as its not expensive and will future proof you for all your mods etc...
I have one and love it!
Contact some mappers for a rough estimate.

Rich, speaking from personal experience I would bite the bullet and buy the Simtek ECU and have that mapped.
I now regret not having gone for the Simtek option with the extra functions but at least with the JDM ECU you can run dual boost levels but not maps on an Ecutek remap.
Just thought I would add as well that the prices above are plus VAT as well.

I know what your saying, I don't know where I'll go with the car in the future but also can't ignore the fact that £400 (+ VAT) is a bargin for the ECUTek.

I wouldn't go the apexi route for a newage car, it doesn't offer much more than the Ecutek if anything at all.
Depends what your future plans are as ecutek on later models can be pushed quite along way. But Simtek would be the way forward if you are going big power later on ie around the 500BHP mark
Personnaly I would Ecutek and a set of AP 6 pots!!!!

ECUTek will do you up to around 450 ish as the MAF becomes restrictive after that! Dual maps is a godsend though, if there's no E85 or Tescos in the area, switch to low boost and job done, a 380bhp map with some timing taken out
So unless you're planning high power later on, stick to the OEM ecu
they both have their pros and cons, it's all down to your requirements ECUTek and brakes is a good idea as Danny said

depends on how far you want to take your car in future, if you have the money go simtek as maffs can be a pain plus it will always be there for future use as simtek will be bringing out some new add ons to add to it soon and these can just be put on when you like, check out web site
also the 2 maps that you can set up are well worth it as you can map for different fuels which is a bonus

Apologies for now replying sooner, I've been away.
Thanks for all the advice, I can't see me modifying the car further than 350bhp so can't justify the extra £940 for the Simtek unit. Going to stick with the ECUTek and spend the rest on suspension.
Thanks again, as I was starting to lose my marbles on this one!!
Cheers, Rich.

Rich,
Think you've made a wise choice on the ECUtek. Any thoughts on which mapper will get your cash?
Now, time to start a thread on suspension I'm also considering my suspension options for the future and am leaning towards an Eibach Pro-S coilover kit. Seems to be a little more compliant for our roads based on the threads I've read.
Good luck mate.

Before going the coilovers route drive a car with some fitted. They are fantastic on ultra smooth roads, but they are aweful on most UK roads. Most of us have tried a set and I'm sure most would say they are not as good as the standard shocks on our roads. It's all down to spring rates, get them wrong and it's bumpy city.
I've had two sets (Cusco and AVO) and found them both to be to firm- bordering dangerous.
Standard shocks and springs, with all the whiteline goodies is a winner in my eyes/****

Agreed that coilovers are overkill for the road however the Eibachs are apparently quite compliant for coilovers and offer a good blend between a traditional hard coilover and a traditional setup. I'm running Whiteline springs on standard WRX dampers at the moment and while it's ok, I'm looking for a setup offering more control over fast A and B roads.
I used to run D2 coilovers on my track car (Mk2 Honda CRX) with super hard springs and while it was fantastic on track it was downright dangerous on a normal road. I've now switched to Koni's and Eibach springs and it's a better compromise. I wonder if I can get Koni's for the Bug

Thanks for the offer, I wasn't planning on changing the springs and dampers as the STi ones seem to do the job, although I did take a look at the KW Varient 1's and also some AST but at £3700 for the AST kit that was out of the window!!.
As DannyBoy said, I'm going to throw a load of whiteline kit at and maybe some pillowball top mounts.

Likewise, I have the Prodrive set up with fast Road Competition spring, handling is awsome, not too harsh, but not teeth rearranging, but your welcome to try that setup if you like
