Intercooler advice needed
When i had my car remapped i was advised to upgrade the standard intercooler on my uk 99 impreza.
I don't know if i would be better off going for a newage sti topmount,or going down the frontmount route
Also will the car need to be remapped again with a different intercooler.
I would be grateful for some advice.
thanks mark.

Would defo need to be remapped after a front mount Mark, otherwise you'll get the same as i did and the car will overboost and cut the power. The draw back i've found with a front mount is that you get a bit of lag between gear changes, but you soon get used to this and just change gear a bit quicker. Its definatly the safest route if your going to be running higher boost.
If your not going to be running anymore boost/power than you are now, i'd go for an STI 8 top mount. Their around the best top mounts, rated up to 400BHP and readily available too. Supposed to be a bit fiddly to fit to a classic, but so is the front mount.
Top mount
For: Very little lag between gear changes.
Against: Prone to heat soak from engine bay making them less efficient, especially on high boost/power cars.
Front mount
For: Not prone to heat soak and far more efficient due to higher surface area.
The safest option on high boost/power cars.
Against: Increased lag between gear changes.

TBH unless your going for 450bhp+ the sti top mount is all you'll need, i think a front mount is more for cosmetic apeal than performance gains and may even introduce more lag, would'nt realy need a remap but you would see gains from one

Ian, i know the newage wrx intercooler is bigger than our classics,so would the wrx be good enough or would i be better off looking for a newage sti.

Horses for courses mate. Less work with the Newage but you can run a bigger turbo and BHP with the STi IC.
I was put off with the extra cutting and work with the STI. The Newage is cheaper compared to the STi and it's easier to get the Newage Undertrays.
Your call.

I put a Newage WRX intercooler onto my old classic. it was simple to do actually. i used the same classic brackets just altered there shape a little bit then sprayed them up.

if i was to be doing a few mods soon. ie vf38, bellmouth decat, headers and fuel pump. would i be better off going front mount on my sti v3. i know i will have to get the piggy back ecu as well but would i be wasting my time with upgrading my top mount?

As Richie said really, no need to go front mount unless your running high BHP. It was a good move for me as i had the smallest slanty type intercooler on there standard and bought the front mount cheap. I'd be tempted to go for Mervils STI top mount if i were in your position, may as well do it before the re-map. Scooby 401 runs 375 BHP on his STI 8 top mount, no problems, they are viewed to be the best top mount by far.

I've been down the FMIC route before and unless i was going over 450bhp i wouldn't do it again, unless it was an early classic where an STI8 intercooler won't fit.
