I find coppers a bi amusing..
Cars I have been pulled in
Ford fiesta 1.3
Vauxhall Astra 1.3
MG ZS Diesel
Toyota Carina 1.6 estate (complete shed)
Cars I haven't been pulled in

Numerous Audi's (fleet)
Land rover with rude stickers and show plates.

I think a lot of the time it depends on the individual officers - I'm sure sometimes they will look at a car and driver, and if they think there could be something dodgy, will pull them to have a nose around. If you come across with any attitude they will find anything they can to do you for.
I have been stopped on both my bikes, in each case it was because the copper hadnt seen them around before, and wanted to see who owned them and give them a quick once over. With my Ducati with full race cans, he wasnt bothered about them being illegal at all, just said he reckoned they sounded great !
I would agree on show plates in Cardiff though - dont seem to be very popular with the Police there ( hence the reason I changed mine for standard just to save any possible hassle ).
A lot of the traffic police in Cardiff are very good though, and seem to target the young chavs in clapped out cars that probably dont have licenses or insurance rather than people in performance cars who look like it is theirs rather than one they have 'borrowed'.
