Question

Gents,

I brought the HKS suspension off Sly and was after some advice about which springs to use?

I have 2 sets, 1 is 2 x 225lb and 2 x 275lb and the other is 4 x 510lb progressive. I do use the car occassionally on the road but also do about 10 track days a year.

Also, I'm going to put Dunlop DJ01 road leal slicks on which have very stiff sidewalls which will mean an even harder ride!

Your advice please!!

Dom.

I just gave both sets to Power Station and told them what I wanted.....I let you which springs they used and how stiff they are.

dom, the softer set would be OK for the road in most peoples opinion, 275/225 front and rear. scoobysport recommend 325/225 on the leda coilovers as the best compromise for UK roads. 510 progressive? sounds like a tarmac setup to me. there is no such thing as a linear spring so all springs are non-linear strictly speaking. i use 400/275 on my leda's and it's top. too firm for some though.

I would say that 510's would be near enough solid. I had 450's on my cusco set up and with my dainty weight (yeh right) jumping up and down on the towbar (bike trailer) the rear suspension would travel about 1/4 of an inch! Great for low ride heights as you don't get rubbing problems when the suspension can't move, also good for re-arranging all internal organs.

Power Station said the 275lb and the 225lb are the best to use for fast road track use...the 510lb are progressive which i'm told will not be as good!!

Also, I need the springs to be constantly stiff otherwise the tyres catch the arches at slow speeds!!!

The car is still at Power Station and will be back early next week so I'll post the results!!!

Dominicm - any chance you have the dimensions for the HKS coilover springs ie overall length and internal diameter?

I have a set of HKS Hipermax coilovers and have found that the 510lb springs are too hard except on beautiful smooth roads so am going to change them to something a little less extreme. With the 510lb springs there is no movement when you try and depress the suspension. Ideal for track use but not for some of the roads you find in the British Countryside!

Morning Ken,

I have 275lb on the front and 225lb on the rear and there is no movement in these, on the track the rears are too hard causing the car to skip when trying to get the power down! I do have some progressive 510lb which I'm guessing are the same as yours so I can assume that these are too hard as well.
I have emailed some companies that sell our suspension for suggestions but have not recieved any replys as yet. Do you want the measurements from any of the springs as I only have the 510lb ones at hand?

Dominicm - thanks very much for the comments - I now have the measurements and am about to order springs from Demon Tweeks. I spoke to TSL Motorsport and they recommended 350lbs at the front and 250lbs at the rear. Which is slightly harder than what you have! What model car do you have?

Ken,

I have a MY95 STI RA which had 17" rims on and standard suspension when I got it, also it does have front and rear strut braces. I brought the HKS off this site with both sets of springs, they were sold as a bit too hard for everyday road use....I can confirm they are!

I also had to have the ride raised as I have some road legal slicks which were catching the arches with the old suspension.

The ride is defo. too hard for road and even for track, the front end is good on the track but the back end needs softening up as it just skips about underload!

Can you advise me what Demon Tweeks call the springs that fit our suspension as I defo. want softer on the rear.

Cheers
Dom.
