As long as you key it and etch prime it first mate any satin black solvent based paint will be ok mate but the etch is the most important.

I just used normal black spray paint from halfords and sprayed it straight on... it stuck fine, but can always top it up again easily

For keying id use some scotch pads or some very light grade sand paper[600/800grit] and i use wurth products for my etch and black satin which are abit pricey but very good and do the job right.
The fins just need to have the scotch taken across the front of them lightly and then just let the paint fall in to them when painting as they will not receive any abuse on the in between bits so do not require any key and also you can not get in to thoses area's to key it any way.

Definitely not. The powder coat is too thick, therefore would act as an insulator reducing the intercoolers efficency.

A thin coat of etch primer, and two thin coats of satin black will be fine. Providing you don't put tons of paint on you won't see any difference in your intercoolers efficency. (after all most [not all though] OEM intercoolers are painted black)
Spraying my FMIC is on my list of to-dos.....

Best thing to do to an intercooler to change its colour is to anodise it, but thats expensive.

Have you considered stenciling the cooler instead of spraying it all black?

You could either spray the desired 'text' through a stencil in black, or have a negative stencil and spray all the cooler black bar the text which would leave the 'text' showing as silver/alloy.

just a thought
Rob

i used this stuff to do mine

Heat resistant paint specially formulated for your radiator, won’t peel, interfere with the heat transfer or block airflow. Withstands 150ºC, also suitable for heater cores.

I don't know for sure but I would assume the same, surely spraying an intercooler will just block it up and reduce the airflow?

Doesn't block the airflow as such. If the paint is a little too thick then it acts like an insulator preventing the heat from escaping stopping the intercooler from being an efficient heat exchanger!

As long as the paint is only VERY thin ie no more than 3 aerosol coats then virtually no differences will be seen in inlet charge temps.

Scaremongering.

Mine has had more than a few coats of paint over the years and still copes with 600+bhp.

Inlet charge temps remain very low according to my Syvecs datalogs.
After a run the outlet pipe from the turbo is very hot to touch. The outlet side of the intercooler is always like a cold tin of coke by comparison.

I just used a rattle can from Halfords followed by a coat of laquer. I've no idea if it reduces the IC's performance, But I did read a post by Harvey saying that powder coating was to be avoided.
