Help starting work offshore
#1
Lo peeps
I am very interested and keen to work in the offshore oil industry.I am willing to start at the bottom and work my way up if the opertunity presents itself. I am therefore looking for a job as a Roustabout or a Roughneck or similar. I dont have experience which is a negative, but I feel I have skills that I could adapt.
What did you guys do?

Scoty,
Main employers for those jobs are...
Smedvig
APG
Rowan
Dietsmann
Santa Fe
Try a search of the web for job sites, I'm sure there is a dedicated Aberdeen site...don't know where though.
A good start would be to fund yourself thru' your Survival at RGIT, King Street, Aberdeen.
If I can think of anymore info I'll let you know.

Got in touch with RGIT for course details and pricing.
Course's run twice a week on the Mon and Wed @£400
So first step is to take the Basic Offshore Survival & Firefighting course. Am I right in saying that I will also need a medical certificate from an approved UKOOA doctor?

Probably best, as already stated, to get a survival certificate - not cheap around £800 for the full course I think (i just have to do the refresher which is cheaper).
Jobs as Roustabout are not so easy to get now - roughneck you would need offshore experience.
There is a drill crew school in Aberdeen now, that could be worthwhile - again it is going to cost !
Another route would be to get in with a service company but they would require a relevant degree or trade skills.
Good luck - and as RB5 says, it gets bloody cold out there.

To be honest getting in to the oil & Gas indusrty is going to be hard work in today`s economic climate. A lot of Drilling Companies etc are having to lay off workers and Mothball rigs!
Also you`ll probably need some sort of experience before they will employ you, it`s the usual catch 22 situation, you need some experience of working offshore to get the job but how are you to get if no-one will give you a chance.
Hope if all goes well for you.

That's the hard bit, I have'nt worked with anyone who currently work on the rigs, and if the industry is going through a lull, then a recommendation is what I need.

I work for a drilling contractor, and confirm that our side of the business is in the toilet right now. But if you do your survival/medical etc, I would be happy to forward your CV to our HR Dept for when things pick up (soon hopefully).
We operate a "green hands" programme for new recruits with no offshore experience, but right now it's more likely that we would be letting people go.

Scoty, I also work for a drilling contractor (GlobalSantaFe) and to be honest with you now is not the best time to start to get work in this game.
If you are still keen, then the people to speak to are Rowan Drilling or Ensco as they are happy to employ people who have never worked offshore ("green hands") and "brainwash" them to their way of work.
Good luck M8

Got in touch with all company's and web sites listed so far
Clubby, can you send me an e-mail m8, so I can keep in touch please?
Doug I am 28 m8, whats the criteria for an apprentice (I am probably a bit young )
Thanks WUZ, currently looking at their web sites m8, I probably wont be put off by low intake numbers to be honest m8, it's not that easy to get a decent job anywhere at the moment.
What is the "Green hands"??

Hey - When the WTD comes in next August, and 2 and 3 is rolled out industry wide, they'll be needing loads of extra crew!
Agree with the others - Difficult without a relevant trade...
Don't give up tho' - Once you get a foot in the door, and all that...
Ross.

Just signed up to www.rigjobs.co.uk and paid the $30 to have my CV sent out to all the employers on their database. Not sure if it is a good idea, if I dont yet posses my survival and medical, but I could always re-send it once I have the two, and that would allow me to keep in touch with the employers and show some comitment.
Thanks for all links to web sites, there are certainly plenty of careers on offer from most companies, but very little in the way of roustabout or similar.
Production management vacancies all require off shore experience, so I am going to focus on trying to get a start as a roustabout or green hand or similar.

You don't want to do that! - There's all sorts of wierdo's offshore (isn't there WUZ)
If you've got good qualifications, I would suggest getting in with a service company.
Almost everyone starts at the bottom such as a roustabout or a steward. There's probably no chance you would get started higher than that. And at the moment there's not much career progression as most people have been in the game a long time and are waiting for promotion. You'll be at the bottom of the list when it does come round.
There are a few agencies that may be able to help:
MacGregor Energy Services, Great Yarmouth and Aberdeen.
Atlantic Resources, Aberdeen.
Northlandic, Great Yarmouth.
Also look at the Aberdeen Press and Journal (Friday's I think).
Best of Luck - Remember, once you're in the game, it's hard to get out of it!

Scoty,
I'm off-shore just now, and its bloody cold.
Have to thought about a service hand job: Cementing, Mud Engineer, MWD, Wire-Line Logging etc.
I've just heard that FMC (wellheads)were looking for folk
Swaco
BJ
Appollo
MI Fluids
Baroid
I work for Baroid as a mud engineer, I'm not sure if they are looking for folk just now but I can ask if you like. They take on complete beginners.
hope this is of some help

Highlander, thanks for the names of the agencies and the advice, I am looking in to contacting them now or in the morning.
Hi Kate, have you got e-mail access just now? Could you send me an e-mail please via my profile, or put a contact address and I will get in touch with you. Yes I would take on a job as a service hand.
Thanks again, everyones help is much appreciated
