Knockhill.....must try harder.
#1
Hi folks,
first of all big thanks to John and all the other guys who organised the trackday on Saturday, great fun and conditions couldn't have been better.
Looking for a little help here, my aim is to lap knockhill in under a minute. I was consistantly managing 62's and 63's (once the smarties got out the way ) on standard RA suspension and skinny full slicks. Which suspension upgrade is likely to give me that 2-3 seconds I'm looking for, if this is at all possible. I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment, strut braces, drop links, antilift kits, bumpsteer mod, polybushes, lowering springs, coilover kits.
It was great to meet more of the guys and hope those brave enough enjoyed their passenger laps...get your motors on next time guys!
Caught up with Numptie at last, and treated TUT to a half finished bacon roll what more could a guy ask for?
What was those name stickers on rear side windows all about by the way?

Thanks Alan for the passenger laps, definately great fun. Keep at it I'm sure you'll manage to pull out another couple of seconds.
As for putting the Alfa on it'll be like adding an extra bend in.
Cheers to all the other guys for taking me out. Tut's barefoot heal and toeing was great to watch along with the driving.

Alan,
it's probably cheaper and easier (on your spine) to hire a Caterham for your track events, than play around with the suspension to get you down to 60 seconds.
However, I'd probably start with the uprated poly bushes, uprated drop links, and bigger anti roll bars all of which can be done with "sensible" money. Probably best going to somewhere like Powerstation (which although at the other end of the known Universe), will do a good job and get it all setup correctly. At the same time, it may well be worth getting some Eiback springs fitted as well, to lower the car slightly, and firm up tha handling.
When running on track, I would also strip out the car as much as possible, to help reduce the weight. This means jack, spare wheel, tools, half tank of fuel, rear seats, hi-fi & speakers etc. 20 - 30Kg can make a big difference over the course of a lap - perhaps not a seconds worth, but probably getting close. I have heard it is possible to strip out almost 100Kg of weight from an Impreza, by looking at bumper bars, centre consoles, carpets, sound deadening etc. Perhaps a bit extreme for a car which is regularly used on the road.
The combination of the above should see you get significant gains, and allow you to corner slightly faster, and get on the power a bit earlier.
After this, it's then the expensive option of adjustable coil-ocers, and you are probably looking at about £1500 - £2k for a quality kit fully fitted. This is likely to give you another small reduction in lap times, but probably not as much as the first steps listed above, and nowhere near as much for the money.
After that, you are probably looking for a bit more power to help you get dwon the straights a little faster. Front mounted intercool, bigger turbo, elf turbo racing fuel etc.
Another thing to look at is your driving (no offence!). Generally we are all quite kind to our cars when on the track, as we know we have to drive them home again at the end of the day. However, if you wanted a really fast lap, then you could easily shave off a second by being very aggressive with the car, cutting all the corners (hitting the kerbs hard), braking very late for the corners etc. It is hard on the car, but may just give you that magic lap time.

In my case idiocy, but others will need to speak for themselves
The name stickers just let everyone know who you are, handy if you want to speak to someone you have only ever spoken to on-line.
As to the lap times, I don't remember seeing anyone driving at 10/10ths on the day, if you are willing to risk yourself and your car you could probably knock off the required secords, however I wouldn't recommend it.
If you haven't had the geometry checked/sorted out that is a cheap instant fix which could make a large difference.
You also don't mention your brakes, if these are standard then uprating them will probably help a lot.

Sub 60's should not be far away. Checking back my data log from the previous knockhill, my fastest lap was 58.9 on skinny hard slicks (the £25 each s/h ones) that was without a passenger With a passenger I was running 60.something on a clear lap but never below Just backs up what John said re weight !!
FWIW I run Leda coilovers and a whiteline adj rear ARB, the ledas are adjustable height although I specified to Leda the damping rate so that's fixed. The 4 shocks, inc springs and top caps were £600 (direct from Leda, not via Scoobysport)

Thanks for the responses guys, and even me buying a smartie suggestion had been on the cards for a while, until I bought the missus a new motor to ferry the kids, which has left me pretty skint.
Ditto the remarks on driving 10/10, not for me I'm afraid, and the driving tuition, well you can't educate wood can you?
Certainly plenty food for thought so far as suspension mods go, but I couldn't justify the trip to powerstation just to have a few bushes and springs fitted, though I'm sure they do a good job.
The £600 leda coilovers sound excellent, could you possibly mail me some details to elenal@madasafish.com
I can see a busy few winter nights coming up and I know a man with a laser so that's good enough for me
The names on the window thing, well if it's utter stupidity and pure daftness, then I'm yer man, where do I get some from for next time, though can they do a picture of Pob instead of the flag
Thanks everyone, great day, great company.
