Default Gearbox options please....

I've got a 93 wrx with a good few mods. Car was last rolling roaded at 330bhp and I've done a good 20k miles in it. Just had the car remapped again due to head gasket going and doing a few other mods while the engine was out. Not sure if the car is putting out more power, but it certainly spools quicker and pulls a bit harder.

Anyway I think the gearbox has now gone on the car. I can select 1st and reverse, but can't get any other gear. I don't seem to be able to select any gears when the car is moving. I take it the box has gone?

What options do I have to replace the box?

Hopefully someone could post approx prices and if anything else needs changed to fit the box. Standard box would go straight in, but what about other boxes?

cheers

I have recently changed my box after a few launches with 300lbft going straight through it (uprated clutch).
options are
1. replace like for like (you will break this one so dont bother)
2. go for STi 6 speed around £1800-2k without labour
3. go for PPG/similar gear kit and phase 2 casing (stronger), £2200 exc labour around £3k inc

it all depends on what you use the car for? daily driver with the odd trackday/drag
hope this helps

DropShots Day

360 bhp x 350 lbft.
Has done over 150 starts like this with:
Type R box (and stock Sti V3 before it)
AP Organic clutch
Full AVON race slicks.

Still in the car, still perfect.

If you are to upgrade go to ppg conversion as £3K above.

hi mate

I don't follow your post. Do you just have the standard type R box in yours? I've got an Excedy uprated clutch in the car at the moment. Will a type R box fit straight on? Does this not have different gear ratios?

cheers

I currently have a stock Type R dccd box in my non dccd Sti V3.

The clutch is an AP Organic, now 3.5 years old, 150+ drag starts and 9000 road miles too.

The box has RA short ratios but uses the 4:444 diff ratios so is a clean swop using the same rear diff as my original Sti.
The version I have is a V5/V6 ty 754 transmission which is about the strongest stock 5 speeder available (rare too).

The car now also has a tight plated rear diff for traction.

The point of the slicks comment is that places far more traction loading on the transmission, they need a brutal start technique to get the best starts.
This means they are very reluctant to spin so the trans takes a severe impact when dumping the clutch at 6000 rpm (as per video)

The car has about 360 bhp/350 lbft torque.

Graham.

Im running 400bhp/400ft lbs torque and have a ppg box with straight cut 1st 2nd 3rd / hel cut 4th 5th with exedy twin plate clutch and its the dogs bollocks, so PPG gets my vote £2700 fitted at scoobyclinic and its up to you which way you want your gears but they will give you advice on which way to go. Hope this helps
