Default Advice, where is this leak coming from.

Hey guys,

This is driving me crazy, my boot is leaking for the second time (first time was the spoiler which I have resolved) .

At first I was sure it was coming from the rubber seal in the corner but after a lot of wasted time and effort I realised this was not the case.

Water seems to be very slowly seeping along this metal ridge line and forming drips in the corner just under the rubber seal (making it look like the seal is at fault).

My only theory at the moment is that the window needs to be removed and re-sealed, can anyone confirm that this is the case.

Are there any other likely causes?

Thanks in advance for your time/advice. D

Leaking in from the rubber seals around the lights is a common fault mate. Have you checked there?

Hey Dan, the lights are about 4ft away from the moisture and they are lower down.

How much did it cost if you don't mind me asking dean?, I have no moisture near the parcel shelf as of yet.

I tried to test the seal by flooding the gutters and keeping the edge of the screen dry, this seemed to indicate that it was in fact the screen.

Its a really horrible place to figure out the problem as its all layers of metal and creases that the water runs down, armed with paper towels and masking tape im still not 100% sure of the source.

fortunately i work at a body shop and the chap that does our glass did it for free well he doesn't want anything but he will get a few beers usually a good window fitter will charge about £50 maybe less mine looked like your an easy test is the parcel shelf wet or damp

I got no moisture inside the cabin at all, its all just in the boot, maybe its the black trim that runs along side the window that's allowing water on the inside of the rear wing?

It mists up yes but I'm almost certain that's because the big vents in the parcel shelf allow the moisture from the boot to condensate on the glass.

have you checked the spoiler this is common also there should be a a permanent seal around the spoiler so run some water on it and if water comes from underneath the spoiler this will need taking off and more tape applied

I had a leak in my boot and it turned out to be the boot seal. It took two attempts to seal it properly. My drive is a bit of an incline and I reverse up it, water was holding in the bottom left of the rear screen which was working its way under the seal

The bottom corners were the window rests, the flat metal were the water run pools
Could be breached at the spot welds

Thanks for the time guys,

Ste my drive is on a steep incline and I park with the rear lower than the front.

Its not the spoiler Dean, The spoiler did leak last year and I removed it and put a new closed cell neoprene gasket around the outer edge along with new Subaru gaskets around all the bolt holes and to finish the job I sealed the whole lot with Carafax Caraseal.

Jazzy if that were the case what would you recommend? If that area is breeched it's not plain to see.

It's really doing my head in, You can see in the pictures the water seeps along that metal join but I cant see the origin.

Are you sure it's seeping? And not just condensing on there?

Heya Alc,

I have dried the join fully and then hosed the car down and literally climbed into the boot and examined the join with a torch and found it to be instantly wet again all the water collects in a metal fold and then drips into the boot.

I believe it was you who said to another member not to use RTV sealant but even tho I had great results with Carafax under the spoiler I found it to be way too messy for using on the boot seal, I eventually got pissed off and just RTV sealed it down. (before realising that alough the drip lined up with the corner of the seal it wasn't the source of the drip)

That's one funky tool Dean, I think I might have to do some more experiments on saturday and post the results up here.

Get a mirror & comb the underside in detail looking for rust , off shading , hairline , holes etc etc
If water is getting in / there is a culprit

the tool is excellent you put the box in the boot and use the head piece to listen for the tone once you hear it its the source of your leak

Update, found some time after work and im now 100% certain its coming from the rear screen seal and or the trim on the side of the screen.

Tried to pull the trim off but it doesnt come off easily and im worried about breaking the clip.

Can anyone tell me if there is a technique or is it literally just pull it hard straight up?

Thanks for all the ideas so far.

After pulling at it and agitating it as well as using my finger to hook some sludge and tree debris from under it the leak seems improved however I am currently parked on level ground so perhaps that has something to do with it.

If possible I think id like to remove the trim and clean it then put some sealant on and replace.
