Ideas for a Subaru enthusiasts site/application
Hi guys and happy new year!
I'm a full time web/software developer and was wondering you had any ideas for A Subaru enthusiast site? obviously we don't need a forum as scoobynet is excellent and there are many others but I could do things like "rate my project", live chat, galleries, classifieds etc. This would all be responsive and adapt to mobile/tablets.
It's basically going to be my side project for 2014 - other than that if I can't think of anything I'd be interested in any small-medium businesses dealing in Subaru/imprezas that are looking to expand their web presence.
Cheers,
Mike

Scoobynet has what most users want albeit missing a decent design and some responsiveness.
I actually thought about doing something similar, sorta like Facebook for Scoobies, basically a full on social network with friending, chat, message, forums, store and a free 'blog' for every user a la tumblr.

Thats what everyone thought when Facebook went viral. Social done, no need for anything else.
Enter Twitter. Enter Pinterest. Enter Instagram.
Never too late for anything, just because its been done doesn't mean it can't be redone and improved in the process.

OK, but I have been into the scene since 1996 and my opinion is it won't work to any great degree of success.
The Internet maybe global, but the car scene is different in each country. Look at the differences just with Scoobs between the Americans and the Britsih for instance.
Plus really what does Scoobynet and its ilk and socail media not do that a new site could?

If he's looking to make money from the site then I'd be inclined to agree with you Chris, it wouldn't be a viable money making option, but as a little side project then I see nothing wrong with it.
Yes the UK/US differ greatly, 'hellaflush', 'stance' etc...but as a community that'd make no difference at all.
If it was my project, I'd be inclined to have things like live AJAX chat, self learning Q&A database, wheel tester, i.e: upload car image and have a 'shelf' full of wheels/colours to test on YOUR car, you know, stuff that's often repeated on SNet.
Ohh, also, British* Social* You need to sort your fat fingers out Chris

Well that all depends on what the OP wants from it.

Anyway I am happy to be proved wrong, but would hate someone to put a lot of time and effort in and end up nowhere, that's all I am saying! Maybe starting small would be good!

Yeah I agree Chris, as a little side project/fun, sure go ahead, but if the intention is to make money/business from it then I'd steer clear.

As an after thought, I tell you what would be useful, a simple site a la Google, basically just a search field attached to a database with answers to a lot of the overly asked questions on SNet and the like.
So then we can redirect a user there when they ask stuff like; "Should I fit a dumpvalve?", "Whats better WRX or STi?" etc...

Not really no, a search engine with a pre-determined set of answers, not an SNet debate.
I.E: You hit the site, enter in the search box "Should I fit a dumpvalve?" the site comes back with something like "No, f**k off dumbass" or something to that effect.

Being on the scene for nearly 14 years and founder of one of the earliest
Clubs in the uk and of course the Nbo which is the only Subaru show of
It's kind in the uk I have to say waste of time too
I'm a member of many forums which have all seen reduced numbers
Everything about Subarus have been talked about
All products for mods have been done and purchased and tested
There is not really a future car to save up for
Who honestly would be keen to buy another after the chocolate 2.5 ?
We are all getting older and many have swapped Marques
The chavs have came on board temporarily putting us off communication
The image is poor now
Better products are now available eg performance diesels
Road tax and petrol costs
There will just be a few die hard enthusiast left who will keep them in garages
And fetch them out for shows
The only things in the future will be rust and renovation
Facebook has taken over from forums
So my advice is don't bother as it would be tumbleweed
