Only down side is the head gasket has gone so that's the first job

Welcome to the world of Scooby ownership.
Don't be put off by the head gasket, this sort of stuff happens on all cars, and I have to say that my MY00 Turbo (which I had for 10 years) was the most reliable car I have ever owned.

I have had a couple of uk classics and a v4 type r but never a blob eye

You might want to consider doing the big end bearings while it's out because more often than not they fail a couple of thousand miles after the HG.
