Hey All,

I am currently debating a new car after purchasing a house and do not want to go over £17k.

I know for this I can get a decent UK 1999/2000 scooby (possibly a prodrive) but due to the mileage I do, I am also contemplating a VW Bora/Golf 130/150bhp PD GTI 6 Speed.

I just KNOW that the VW would be the cheapest PRACTICAL option being that they caon potentially do nearly 60mpg, but being an avid car enthuisiast/petrolhead, I rreally do want a Scooby Doo.

My question is to you UK guys...... what mpg are you getting out of a mildly modded scoob (ie Induction kit, s/s zaust etc)

What is a full tank ? £?? how many miles do you get out of it, and what sort of driving so you do to get that economy.

I'm not a slow driver by all means, and just listening to the noise that the s/s zaust (scoobysport/hks/blitz etc) would produce, it would be hard to not acelerate to create optimum noise....

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am looking to purchase approaching the end of june

Cheers

Scott

i regularly get between 270 and 300 miles per tank, that's regular motorway trips and weekend blasts... the tank can hold 60 litres but I always seem to put in around 50 or so.

that's roughly 23mpg... not too bad

considering my previous beast would do 38mpg in the city, it's poor, but you just need to reset your frame of reference - besides the fun factor is worth the cost EVERY time!

oh that rumble...

Personally I use Optimax, £35-£40 average fill up. 265 miles on a tank general driving (hard, round town, some motorway stuff). I also do alot of miles and they are mainly on the motorway. Rather than go 90-100mph everywhere like the rest of the rat race I do between 75 and 80. Boring I know, but you have less risk of getting pulled by the police(in what could be termed as a 'please nick me officer' car), you get there no real slower (5-10 min on 3 an 1/4 hour journey) and less stressed, also I can get 320ish from a tank average when doing this, rather than 270 ish when doing the rat race thing.

These are just general figures, have not actually done the math, just guesstemated which is all you can do really, unless you have a computer in the car (scooby does not have this and rightly so), or spend all day working out the variables.

Hope this helps, ohh, I have a MY01 WRX with ITG filter and scoobysport zorst (removed final cat).

You will virtually always be in the 20-25 mpg range. Top end if you do a very long steady motorway stint, lower end if you do mainly urban or blasts in the country.
This is not significantly altered if you get the Prodrive enhancement either.
Super unleaded will possibly return an extra 1mpg or so over normal unleaded.

Cool

No mods UK turbo
Tank of Optimax/SUL usually £40-42 for 50-52 litres. I get an average of 250 miles from this, dropping to 210ish if the balance of the mileage was "spirited", up to about 280ish on mainly motorway mileage. I do very little town mileage. I've only ever squeezed over 300 miles from a tank twice in 2.5 years...
Average mpg approx 22.5.

I've had 30.3 mpg on a 270-odd mile run from Nottingham to Attleborough (just outside Norwich) and back. Traffic ranged from through town (stop/start), open road, queueing for roadworks, and a bit of a spirited drive along some B roads. That's from an unmodded MY00.

MY00 no mods, 23.5 average. Max 27 on M/Way at 70-80, 18-20 on quick b-road runs. I ran a Passat TDi (115 BHP) for 6 months and got 40-45 MPG on the M/Way and 35-40 on B-roads.

If you are worried about ecconomy don't buy an Impreza. The Golf is a good car, but oh so boring compared to the Subaru.

Don't forget the cost of services and tyres (10-15K miles.

Need any more info, let me know, I have all bills etc, for the tax man!

STi7 Still running in.

2 tank full, appx £40 of Optimax. Mixture of A raon \ Motorway. Full use of the 4000 rpm rev range (4500 on an od occasion ).

Average 22.3mpg

Don't consider that bad but it is probably a little early yet to show a TRUE reflection.

Steve

Edited to say: Only mod is a JPI 1 CAT exhause. ITG Panel Filter to be done following the 1000 mile service.

uk300 with PPP, I get about 220 average from a tank, 160 is the worst was really hammering it though ! Havent learnt my lesson either ! 300 is my best on a long motorway trip after a night out so was being VERY cautious in case of mister plod

for the first few months of owning the scoob I was sure some bugger was stealing my petrol either that or a hole in my fuel tank

You get used to it fairly quickly so get the scoob - way more fun !

18-22 is the number to play with

Ignore any claims for over 30 as they are all poppycock

High milers need not apply - stick to the TDi

On my recent holiday to Cornwall, did 1,185 miles, averaged 25.38mpg. And that was with every kind of driving style, on a 97 WRX with full decat exhaust. Personally i've never got below 22mpg, but then it's never been on a track....

I manage 22-27 mpg in my unmodded MY01 WRX. Once managed 28 but this was pre 1K miles so taking it easy.

pete - you seem to have quite a heavy right foot for a 72 year old - 18 mpg? s£!t (are you sure you don't have a P1 in disguise)

Std MY00, drank petrol like a fish, avg 16.5mpg over almost 2 years. Best of 29mpg (56mph for 338 miles, zzz) worst was 9mpg.

Was improving when I sold it, where 200-220 miles was possible from a tank (approx. 18-22mpg) using SUL & octane booster and changing up at no more than 5,500rpm.

MY00 no mods - averaging about 26 over 2 years but with the warmer weather that's gone up to 28-29mpg in recent weeks. No comparison to a Golf diesel which I tested a few weeks ago. The Golf is v good for economical motoring, scoob is tops for the fun factor. Not sure about Golf quality despite their great image. You also need to think about servicing and tyre costs. Again a scoob is expensive compared to a Golf... Personally I'm thinking of going with a BMW 320d.
