Sti7 Can I do my own interim oil change?

2002 Sti7 Uk
I want to change the oil (and probably filter too) at 5K miles rather than leave it until the prescribed 10K. If I do this myself might that affect my warranty?
Thanks
Scott

Scott,
I did so hate the expensive servicing on the old MY99 but totally agree that 10k srvice is inadequate for such a performance car like the STi7.
I shall take mine to the dealer to be done but if you use the Genuine filters and Oils who's to know but it would look a bit suss to a dealer if you just happened motor Blew at 5.5Kmiles and engine oil & filter looked new someone might smell a rat that wasn't there IMHO
IMHO Try Negoiating a price for an oil change with your local dealer why risk warrenty when there's no need you might get away with £80 if bought materials yourself £50 so whats £30 compared to £29K car

P1F,
Yes you can but where are you going to get a genuine Subaru filter cheaper than from the dealer? I buy the proper Oil I want and get the dealer to supply the filter and do the change for me.
The dealer in my case is super decent and only charges me a nominal amount for doing this

I always do the oil + filter myself. At least I know the job has been done properly. Make sure you fill the filter with oil at least twice. Fill it to the brim once, after about 5 mins it will look empty (the element in the filter will have absorbed all the oil). Fill it again a second time and wait a few minutes then fill it to the brim and fit. I doubt if a greese monkey at the dealers would bother with this. Waiting for the oil pressure to build up to fill even a half empty filter can't be ideal.
As for costing £50. The filter is £13 (a massive rip in my opinion, made in USA!) washer 70p. There is no need to spend £36 on 4.5l of oil. Good quality 10w 40 can be had for £15.

Thanks for the comments, sorry for delay in responding (partly due to outage over weekend).
I've just spoken to me local dealer today (Roseland Motors in Cornwall) who tell me they no longer 'do' Subarus.......nearest dealer in no approximately 70 miles away!

I've just stocked up on oil filters from Roseland as a few of my mates have scoobys (and customers).
If you want to mail me I'll sort out an oil change if your want as I'm just up the road from Roseland.

I've not decided what oil to use yet, I'm still on the stuff that the dealer used at the first service (didn't charge me a lot for it so can't be anything special, certainly not synthetic or semi-synthetic; but this is probably good for extended running in period from what I've read).
I always used Mobil1 (the 10W-50 one) in my old car (2WD Sierra Cosworth stage I tuned, 125k miles on original turbo and no major engine work), so may well go for that from about 5k miles onward. If your interested in oil issues, then have a look here.
Interestingly I looked at my manual and service record/warranty docs today, and noticed the following:
Firstly the manual explains how to carry out an oil change which means they are endorsing owners doing that themselves in my opinion. Also if you read the warranty conditions, there seems to be no compulsion to use a Subaru dealer for serviceing during the first 12 months! It simply says that it's the owner's responsibility to maintain/service the vehicle in line with the recomendations. It's only when you read the terms of the extended warranty (ie beyond 12 months) that it mentions the requirement to use a Subaru dealer.
I'm not really being a cheapskate, and will get the services done by a dealer (even though that now means a 140 mile round trip, or 280 I suppose if I leave the car with them!). Extra 'interim' oil changes I may well however do myself or sort locally. I just thought this was interesting...
