fitting HID's to a 2001 UK300?

Default fitting HID's to a 2001 UK300?

is it as easy as the plug and play kits you can get?
someone said its not so simple with the hella units fitted

any info appreciated.

i need some lights that, err, light up the road lol

You know that after market HID kits are not legal, unless you have self levelling and headlamp washers.

Sorry, but that's a myth.

The law as it stands states that "self levelling and headlamp washers, IF FITTED, MUST WORK".
That's all.

But what DOES make aftermarket kits illegal is that the bulbs aren't compatible with the lenses/reflectors, and it can easily be ascertained by checking for the E-Mark.

Fudgey: I'm not up on the Hella units fitted to those cars. Do they have separate dip and main beam?
if so, you'd need TWO kits, or just do the dip and see how you get on with those.

Some tips:

DO buy decent quality, not e-bay specials.
DO get branded ballasts and bulbs if you can.
DD go for 4300K or 5000K ...NO HIGHER, or you will be disappointed. It's a little known fact that the lower the colour temperature, the more usable light it gives. 4300K is daylight, 5000K is a bluish day. OE HID systems ALL use 4300K.

DO NOT rely on it being plug and play. Some kits are, many aren't.
DO NOT moan if PC Plod tells you to take them off, or fines you

Alcazar if you get those aftermarket fitting kits which contain lenses, this makes them legal?

Fair enough, that explains why I see some may ***** driving about in cars that clearly have had aftermarket kits fitted to them - ******* blinding everyone now that winter approaches!

What about some really good quality bulbs ?
Halfords do some that claim to give out 120% more light than standard bulbs. They are roughly £30 each but think they are buy one get one free.
All completely legal too ofcourse.

As for not plug and play, thats not really amproblem either as i do electronics so have all the kit i need at work.

I cant find any less than 6000k 35w ones in h7 bud.

You wont blind anyone with a decat but Plod can make your life difficult with ****e HID's on display.

I fitted Super Brilliant (waited for a BOGOF) bulbs to my Classic with crystal lenses, way better than the previous HID kit which I ditched after a few months.

My old Bugeye wagon and saloon had the Prodrive UK 300 lamps and they where woeful. Again fitted the better bulbs and Bob's your cross dressing aunty.

They are LHD lights. Remember that the light pattern is cast out from the headlight reflector and not the glass cover that dictate the beam pattern.

$125 postage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True about the beam pattern i guess.
I fitted supposedly decent bulbs to my old puma that had projector lamps, made little difference except to my wallet lol. Even on full beam my mates clio 182 had brighter lamps on dipped!

Hmm, will have a think.

One more question, do you need a canbus kit for a 2001 impreza?
Or just the normal ballasts?

I found the Phillips Xtreme Visions dipped and main beam bulbs worked, coupled with some 5 way LED ice white side light bulbs! Made my UK300 bug lights a lot better.

The difference between the standard headlamps (with or without uprated bulbs) and an HID kit is like night and day - once fitted you'd never go back.
Having fitted some to my old WRX with STI projector lamps, I converted my blob lamps over without a second thought; get an alignment done on the lights and jobs a good un; they flew through MOT no problem at all. 4300k all the way like Alcazar said.
I bought mine from Aztec Performance; there are cheaper kits but tbh the newer Aztec kit is really good and so I just went back as I'd bought from them before.
I'd advise you spend your money on an HID kit rather than bulbs which won't deliver what you're after.

I've run two sets now over the last 5 years and never been pulled for them once.

Cheers mate, for the price of the kit, i have spent that on 'top of the range' bulbs before and not been impressed so gonna try a HID kit.

do you know if a canbus system is needed?
and how long did it take to fit yours mate, i found your how-to and it looks pretty straight forward D:

It is straight forward dude and the newer kits are even more simple to fit .

cheers lads, ordered last a night a set from xenons online, was about £54 inc delivery.
after reading reviews of the cheaper ebay kits i thought id best avoid - although plenty of people have no problems.

will see what they are like when fitted i guess!

The newer kits are actually easier than this still; the blob conversion took me about an hour to do both headlamps.

well, the kit arrived earlier and i have tested they work, and they do - they are fooking bright lol
they look very easy to fit, so ill try and have a go at fitting them later

It should be law that all cars should now be fitted with HID's. I drove my mums Passat the other day, it was lethal down a country lane, like candles mounted to the bumper.

Yep I agree with Mr Noisy, no bulb ever gets close to a HID, and I tried so many in my younger years

but in saying that I think all cars should also be AWD, that save a few deaths especially with the **** in the wet and snow plowing down rounds at 90 in their flimsy FWD Audis

All fitted with no issues regarding the hid's. ot been out in the car yet to test them properly so will report back once i have.

I also got some led side light bulbs, but they are push in ones, not bayonet so dont fit lol. It looks a bit odd with yellow sides and white dipped so ill get some sides that do fit.

The only other issues i had were the screws holding the front of the light unit in all sheared off when undoing them, even after a blast of wd40... And i think the car has had a light knock as the ball joint part of the o/s lamp was still attached to the socket when i removed the unit, and covered in glue lol.

So i used a **** load of mitremate and activator to glue it back on and it seems ok, but i also for silly reason pushed the lens part of the light when refitting and it went crunch... And is now a bit wobbly, so ill have to take it back out and get the super glue out again....

So, xenons online is the place to get them from. Cant fault the kit all. Took about an hour to fit all in i guess with the messing about

Well, upon my drive to work today... it was lightish as the clocks changed lol so cant tell how good they are in the dark yet....

BUT

i did notice tht when i turned on the lights.... the radio reception went to ****

lights off = radio is fine
lights on = radio is poo

there was a H4 3 pin connector that the pins were a bit green on, so ill clean them up to see if it makes any difference...

Might be a dodgy ballast.

If it continues, unplug each ballast, in turn, from the power supply, (NOT the thick lead to the bulb), and see if it makes any difference. If it does on one and not the other, get them to change it.

If it's both of them-mail to them might produce a solution....if it's the ballasts, you can't be the only one with that problem?
