Default first job on the scooby

so at the weekended i decided to take a look at the scooby
iv not been driving it yet but i decided to to clean the idle control valve since its been idling at 500 rpm
i wasnt sure if this was right or not but i thought id clean it anyway as it couldn't hurt

first annoyance: apparently FHI thought cheese would be a good material to make screws out off
i had the right screw driver that was perfect for the screw but striped it almost instantly

second annoyance:
what the hell are thease screws on the valve? some odd security bits. i mean come on its my car not a bank. i converted them to flat heads using a dremal

third annoyance: the flecking gasket is too big! it wont go back on now!

dose anyone have any idea how to shrink it back?

or if not where can i get a new one for cheap?

cheers
josh

Subarus idle low,not 500 though

Classic mistake made by lots of people. The minute you take the valve of the rubber expands and its impossible to get back. (I also made the same mistake)

But surely that means it is broken? Haha
Its a bit off a poo design the tolarance is so close in the valve that any crap just makes it stick right away. Its not got much power to overcome the crap eather

Iv acttualy had some luck in skrinking it. Iv alcoholed it and boiled it and froze it. Its getting smaller iv seen the eBay one. 10 quid for a small gasket though!

Pay the money mate. If you dont and it has a small leak somewhere it will cause you no end of problems. Right down to a f*cked engine.

Alyn @ AS Performance sorted me a gasket at a good price mate.

Not worth messing about with an old used gasket IMO.

I had a load of bother with mine (newage STI) and after cleaning it 2 or 3 times I ended up getting one off Matty @ pole position was less than 40 quid delivered iirc and it sorted my car straight away.

Good luck with it though buddy

Well hopefully all will be well when its back together, although its "clamped down tight" you can only tighten it until the tho machined faces meet once the screws are tight you're relying on the gasket holding its shape and pressing against all surfaces to make the seal, new seal = better job IMO

Mick
agreed
but it worked for the last 9 years at that shape.

the gasket fits well in the slots so any amount of force from clamping it down is going to cause defamation pressing the sides giving 4 seals

its probably better just to use a new one like i am but its just annoying me a little. im used to gaskets like this one being about 1 quid

Depends where you go for the bits!

A replacement window strip on mine was going to be £88.00 from Subaru.

Got a good used one on here for £19 delivered.
