Impreza GL
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has an Impreza GL but with the turbo engine and if so have you informed DVLA that the car is actually a turbo?

You should really, any engine transfer should be reported and it can change the tax price.
I informed the Dvla of my engine transfer when I swapped a 1.8 lump out of my MK2 Golf and fitted a 2.9 VR6, had to send engine numbers and a mechanics letter to approve the swap
Then rang my insurance

I seen a GL for sale and the guy said it was a turbo from the factory even though it was a GL. Wasnt sure if i would have to tell DVLA if it came out the factory as a GL but had a turbo on it

What he means is it came out of factory as WRX, then the person who imported it, imported it as a gl. Properly to get cheaper insurance, the problem will come if you have a crash, once the insurance see its a WRX it will be classed as you have no insurance and you will be done by police

Thanks for the info guys. I just wasnt sure how it would be my fault if on the v5 it days its a GL and thats what the car is. Its basically the only way for me to be able to insure a turbo impreza.

They won't care who's fault it is what's listed on the V5 they will use any excuse not to pay out as your premium for cover will be based on the power and value of a GL.
How old are you and what's your driving history I insured my 1st impreza WRX at 20 no ncd so could be a deal out there

Im 20 years old and have had my license for just under two years with no points. I have priced other imprezas and there is no chance for me insuring one just yet.

Don't try to insured it as a GL. If you have an accident the insurance assessor will realise right away that it's a turbo. You will have no insurance and whilst the insurance company will have to pay out for the other party they won't pay out for your car. Additionally, they WILL come after you for the money they've had to pay out. The police will also be interested in you driving with no insurance. It's just not worth it. Try one of the specialist insurers on Scoobynet you may be surprised.

Like everyone says you'll get done for no insurance basically
Either insure it properly or dot buy it,
Try getting quotes for non imports as some times they can be cheaper with some companies
Can you imagine if you had a 100k motor and someone crashed into you with a "gl" impreza when in fact it is a wrx
Pissed would be an under statement

I think that car dealers are to blame here as well. Lost count of how many ads I've read which reference imports, either in WRX or STi form but registered as GL models. Instead of rectifying the problem through the DLVA (as responsible people), they use words like "keep registered as a GL", "cheaper insurance" and "no brainer" instead.
