Hi all,

Neil here from staffs. Thinking about getting a WR1. I have about 10k to spend.

I am totally new to the Subaru scene so wanted your opinion.

If you had 10k would you buy a WR1 or another model? I have a lot to learn so sorry for the initial questions :-)

Quoting myself there.

Go for an MY05 STi PPP with the DCCD if you want the best version of the car. Plenty available.

If you are not fussed, don't waste the extra cash on the divisive colour scheme when you could save a few bob going for a standard MY03-04 car.

People will pop up and start saying get a JDM car etc etc but if you are after a UK car the MY05 is the one to go for.

WR1 is a good car and if you're into limited edition cars it will be worth spending the extra on. They have an owners club and get together at shows ect. If you're not bothered about limited editions your money may be better spent on an run of the mill STi wide track blob.

Personally I would just get a Blobeye STI widetrack and use any left over for tweaks.
I don't like the WR1 colour either

10k will be a nicely sorted Widetrack (2005 blobeye) or perhaps a JDM version.

Both better specced than a WR1 but without the exclusivity.

Wow - thanks guys, great response. This does obviously raise more questions than answers. However it looks like the general consensus is the WR1 is overpriced and the later model in the 05 is better (I am not too sure why better - is it quicker? or have a better engine? or just better overall spec?).

Not knowing ANYTHING about the Scooby world, i was going on pure looks initially and I like the WR! looks and colour (I know not everyone does - the world would be boring if we all liked the same).

So, now that I am armed with a bit more information, I will trawl the net and this site to get a better idea of what I am getting into. Might be worth spending 6-7k on a standard beauty, then use that as a base to make it my own. I am seriously thinking of doing this now.....

I know people have their personal preferences, same on any car forum, but it does look like the general consensus is any model is good, there are none that should really be avoided - for the price I am looking at.

Out of interest, while looking at the list here - what is the consensus on MILEAGE - should I be looking for as LOW as possible, over spec and age? or can I get a 70-80k mileage car and it be still be strong etc (assuming full service etc)?




Looking at the Spec C, I understand this is a import and more race spec, less creature comforts, thinner glass&paint etc. So do people go for the Spec C just for the speed and additional .xx on the 0-60time? I am just trying to understand the lure of the Spec C.

The year 2000 onwards 'New Age' cars are known by their headlight shape:

2000 - 2002 'Bugeye' or just 'Bug'.
2002 - 2005 'Blobeye' or 'Blob'
2005 - 2008 'Hawkeye' or 'Hawk' (the 2.5 litre engines are fragile though)
2008 - 2011 'Hatch' (not the headlight shape)
2011 onwards, er, no idea!

Pre-2000 they're all known as 'Classics'.

The Spec C is lighter and will be based on a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) car which has a stronger engine, usually more powerful than the UK market cars as standard, and as you say, has less creature comforts to save the weight.

If you want exclusivity, your £10,000 might just get you a Litchfield Type 20 Blob, although they're very rare. Google 'Litchfield Imports' to find out more.

Thats too expensive imo, but it is from a dealer so suppose you expect a premium.

A pal recently sold a 54 plate sti with ppp but with uprated ARB's and 51K for £6500.

8k is a bit overpriced but depends if you get a decent warranty I guess but its a dealer so expect to get a bit raped

I have seen this and absolutely love it, within price, but it is 350miles away (6 hour drive) - long to go to find the car is not for you.


yes, agreed - just wanted to see if this is the type of car people are generally recommending as good entry point. It is too expensive and have too many miles for me.

Jump on the train. You'll rarely find your perfect car on your doorstep.
A car purchase is a big deal and a large amount of money, if a £50 train journey is what it takes then so be it.

as matty says you need to invest a bit of time and money, I looked at ten plus cars before buying mine also don't let mileage put you off as service history and general condition is more important.

I'm not at all surprised, it was way, way too cheap. Keep hunting though. As others have said, you have to be prepared to go a long way and be patient. Mine took me six months to find but it was well worth waiting.

Having spoken to him there are a couple of paint nicks, and a new stereo need (no problem). FSH all else looks good, and on the phone he will take 7k. going to see it Wednesday.

this gives me some spare cash to get things done....
