Engine rebuild...
This is relating to an 05 STi :-)
Out of interest, and at this stage purely hypothetical, if I had a fully running engine in my car, how much would it cost for someone who knows what they are doing to take that engine out of my car, completely rebuild it so it was like a new engine, and put it back in.
In other words, to rebuild it BEFORE it breaks, rather than after.
And finally, is there any point in doing so?

Rebuild depends if you want to up the power before it goes bang and regarding prices, you really need to speak to a builder as there are many variations to what options you want to do. Personally I have just had mine done by engine tuner (Alan Jeffrey) and the service is top notch.

Looking at more like £3k plus vat for a forged build. I'm having mine rebuilt at the mo by Tim Farmer at a very decent price after the bottom end went. Sti9 bottom end and my heads but all depends on the condition of the crank, rods, pistons etc tho.
I'd say you'd be better off spending the money on a good mapping session, a knock sensor and some octane booster in case you get a crap batch of fuel. That would keep her healthy.

A proper remap with a mapper of good repute, and a Knocklink are good advice.
Ring if I can help you more.

Hi guys, thanks very much for the interesting advice and opinions. I hadn't thought of the "leave it alone unless something is wrong with it" scenario.
The main reason I was asking is that the engine is making a little bit of a ticking/grinding noise, but I don't know if its belt slip, or something a bit more serious. I can't locate the exact part of the engine making the noise. Being slightly deaf makes it quite difficult to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, and no matter which part of the engine I listen to, it seems to be coming from there!
It doesn't always make this noise, so its hard to take it to a garage as I look a bit daft when I take it there when it isn't making any noise, and due to my shift patterns at work, when I drive the car tends to be later at night when theres nowhere open to take it to!
I wondered if getting a rebuild done WHILST its working would be cheaper than waiting for it to go bang and then getting one done.
This is the noise that the engine is making, if anyone wants a listen! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E58W8...ature=youtu.be
And thanks to David at API, I might well be giving you a call if it does die!

No, you could well be right. When I say engine noise, all I'm referring to is noise coming from the general direction of the engine, not specifically coming from the internals of it!
The air con module does seem extremely stiff, the triangle bit that you can see at the front of the engine of the air con doesn't rotate freely, so I firstly thought it was that. Problem is, it sometimes makes the noise even if the air con isn't turned on, so I'm not sure. Also, the air con still works.
Could well be an auxillary belt, but the belts all seem to be the required tension.

Thats definitely worth a try. Problem is I don't know how to remove the belt, so I'll get my girlfriends brother (a mechanic) to do this. The car doesn't make this noise all the time, suggesting (possibly) it isn't an engine problem as it would happen all the time if it was? Once its doing it, I'll get him to take that belt off and see what happens.

Right, I've just had a thought too. If it turns out its the air con belt (or air con unit) making this noise, is it possible to just take this belt off and leave it off, and not use the air con? Or does the belt also control other parts of the engines operation?
Cheers for any advice!
