As above, you have been told a load of crap.
Put the standard scoop back on, the later one does not look right and is only for the IC
Had mine for nearly a year and no over heating problems temp always at 90c even when sat in a 2 hour crawl.
As long as the cooling system has been maintained and in good order you will have no problems.

You should only be watching that temperature guage when you have an OEM 2.5 under the hood.
Never had any problems with my Bug or Blob, they were screwed together properly those things!

The 2ltr is a good engine, the problems on these are caused by aging of the plastic at the end of the radiator, they go brittle and get hairline cracks in them which then causes coolant loss when the engine is hot (so you don't notice).
If you get that problem then a new radiator is called for, not exactly expensive for a decent one anyway
Apart from that, just look for wear and tear items (brakes, bushes, linkages etc) and ensure you have some cash left over for a major service, no matter what has been done to the car by the previous owner, if you get it done then you know where you stand on the servicing

Really, all my PSI3 does is alarm if any of the limits I have set are exceeded - the ECU controls the fans and currently come in when the water temps get to 96/97 degrees. I've not found anything on the PSI3 that lets you change that as it is an engine data monitor not a programmable ECU

I notice that the OP quoted "and a fan you can operate when and as needed".
Presumably that's when you see and hear the PSI3's CT alarm going off.

You can't do this from the PSI3 though, you'd need to run a seperate circuit to bypass the thermostatic switch that's in place - been discussing the same issue with my mate as he want's to do this on his elise but doesn't have a clue where to start - I did suggest a car showroom
