Ksport Impreza Time Attack Race Report Cadwell Park April 1st 2013
Ksport Impreza Time Attack Race Report Cadwell Park April 1st 2013
So after a full winter nut and bolt rebuild of the car we finally got down to the first Time Attack round of the 2013 season. The car had been somewhat late getting on the finished with a few setbacks and delays meaning testing before round 1 was cancelled.
After finallly completing the build it was taken to the Group B motorsport rollers late last week and Graham Martin mapped the car on the fresh Enginetuner supplied 2.35 motor and the new Simtek ECU achieving 600hp at low boost and 700hp at medium boost setting…a very nice result indeed….as time was pressing and we had other issues to resolve we stopped at 700hp electing to run the engine in properly during the first round and to run full boost and have nitrous maps available for subsequent rounds
Very cold it was yesterday when we set off from home at 5am, minus 1 from memory. We arrived at Cadwell around 9.30 witth lots of faffing to unload, sign on scruitineering etc etc etc…we finally got to go out on track and car felt great, engine pulled very well and handling was better than ever….but after only around 3 or 4 laps in the test session before qualifying the car spun coming out of the mansfield left hander just prior to the mountain section.
It went off the circuit into a grass bank at high speed, the nose dug in and the car pirouetted on its intercooler at an angle of around 45 degrees before landing very heavy on the driver side rear wheel then spitting itself back onto the track facing the wrong way…..quite an impact and I was braced for the car to land on its roof when assuming the crash brace (whilst simultaneously letting a little bit of wee out!)
I was wearing a hans device at the time which limited the whiplash to my neck, i was just left with a headache from my brain getting a good rattle...I would recommend a hans device to anyone driving a seriously quick car...
What caused the crash?...it was snap oversteer, possibly our set-up, possibly cold tyres and cold track, possibly fluid on the track....or even good old human error...or maybe a combination of several of the above factors.....
All in a terrible result for the me and the team….and not the start I wanted...
At the time of writing this report I've not assessed the damage but me and the team will make every effort to get the car repaired and back out for the second round 5 weeks on Saturday....
As always a huge thanks to my sponsors.....Ksport UK, Hardrace, Enginetuner, Group B Motorsport, Simtek engine management, AET turbos, APM Vehicle Graphics, Lateral and Kaps Transmissions.
And off course my pit crew on the day, Graham Martin (aka Enginemapper), Dave Grice, Andy STIV3 and Dave Skyline.

Such a shame paul as you seemed to be running well up to this point, also can I say thanks to your pit crew, they helped answer quite a lot of questions about my build.
Good luck for croft

Not much run off at Cadwell!
When I was racing there once, as it happened only a few days after Liz and I got married, there was a huge accident there. Another Midget like mine flipped end over end and smashed itself to bits. It was black, the same colour as mine, and it took some time after the event to convince Liz that it wasn't mine, and everything was ok!
Thankfully the guy who WAS in the car was able to limp away.
