Default Larger turbo option from vf23 ?

Ok car is going back together, it's a V3 STI with standard engine so what is a good compromise before looking at new engine ect

Or is a VF23 ok when remapped for a fun road cars?

I've had a TD05-16G And loved it. Now have a Td05-20G and its got alot more top end. But alot more lag. If i get a new turbo I will go for the Td05-18G i think!
The 16G is alot of fun in a street car!

Try the MD series. I have an MD321H and the spool is very good. With the right add-ons you can get around 400bhp.

Quite often in life, less is more, personally i think if your keeping the standard type r gearbox then 320/330 bhp with good spool is about right in a road going type r.

Type r's are not built for top end speed, it's about the mid range and how it gets there, if you plan on tracking it a lot then the getting there and the spool is not such a big issue.

Type r's gearbox goes to 157 mph at 8200 rpm so your on the limiter in 5th at that, so a big laggy top end turbo kind of defeats the object.

I'd say SC32/36 or a VF34 which is what i had on mine, there are a few times when you feel like you could do with a bit more power on longer straights, but thats more down to the gearbox than the turbo, but i wasn't prepared to sacrifice the low down pull for a top end that i rarely used.

Type r's are for the twisty bits not the straights, and i don't race people or drive fast with people in the car, so for me it's about the fun i have in the car when i'm alone and conditions allow, not scaring my mates and pub talk bragging wrights, although watching the odd reaction to power sliding out of a bend does give good milage in the pub, but is something you might struggle to do without stripping a cog in a laggy car.

The VF23 is good for about 340BHP with supporting mods, but some say it can be a bit laggy however I found mine to be fine. On standard engine & box you don't want any more than this. Wait until youv uprated your engine & box before shelling out on an expensive turbo for more power.

It's got air fllter, manifold, fmic, and modded fuel rails plus the a the suspension has been done,,, I come from a 350 cossie that had bd10 cams which trust me thus turbo is far from feeling laggy with 11psi held, infact I love the way it comes on boost but do feel I'm missing the power my old saph had and the way that came on boost

Maybe I should keep it how it is then try again later with new turbo after its mapped

What boost spike and holding can a vf23 generally do before it dies as I don't want to just kill the turbo fir a bit more power

You will need uprated fuel pump, bigger injectors, full decat, mappable ECU, fuel pressure reg & possibly a few other mods. I'd speak to your mapper about it. The VF 23 is a strong turbo & can take more power but there are other budget options from the VF or TD ranges. I only replaced mine with an RCM400 after going fully forged & fitting a 6 speed.

RCM or Lateral are the best for injectors, but speak to your mapper first about what size to buy. I run 740s at 440 BHP, they may be to big for your target but running as big as is possible gives more scope for future power upgrades.
