For that money you'll be looking at a WRX blobeye with prob 60k+ miles. IMO best to try and get a clean unmodified example - maybe a ppp (prodrive pack) which ups bhp to 262 which is the same as a standard sti.
However if you could bung an extra grand at it (I know it's a 25% jump) you could get a good clean low mileage one or maybe even a hawkeye one if you're lucky. Go on Autotrader and see what's about.
History is a must but generally good, reliable and fast cars. Also a tracker on it would be handy as most insurers won't cover for theft without one...
Good luck and let us know how you get on

Not great but you dont buy these for economy. Went on a long run down to the west country the other day and saw 320 miles out of a tank, However normal pottering around will return a 100 miles less than that but who cares

I do 20k a year just gettin to/from work, so have a crappy Nissan primera to do that in and use the Impreza for weekend fun.
I avg 26-30mpg in my impreza and I don't hang about either when the traffic or the roads allow. If you live in a area where traffic crawls a lot then mpg will be a lot less but since I'm in Herts that's not too much of a problem for me.
Good luck if you do get it

prev car was a 52 plate wrx blobeye with 250 bhp and used it as my daily drive. loved it
depends on your milage if a lot then your idea of a cheap runaround makes sence
you will love the burble note from the exhaust and as you have found out plendy of poke in the wrx
plus your street cred with your kids goes of the scale LOL
