Fuel filler pipe - where from and big job ??

Default Fuel filler pipe - where from and big job ??

As above. I noticed today after brining my tank yesterday there was a little puddle and slow drip coming from under the Subaru (my99 uk wagon). '*****' I thought, 'there goes next months 36 hours overtime'

So I think looking briefly its the fuel filler neck, apparently notorious for rotting and weeping due to the lack of protection from the elements.

So where to buy a new one from (import car parts is cheapest at £151 so far) and the main question, is it a pig of a job? I doubt I'd tackle it myself so is it a lot of labour time at a specialists?

Advice and experiences always welcome chaps

see if you can get a good reasonably priced used one, i did mine recently on the floor, worse part was getting the screws out from the inner quarter panel as mine had rusted in due to the dirt and crap being sprayed up on the back side of them.

It easy to do. The main problem is the bolts that hold the plastic cover on and into the arch, they can and do snap.

The plastic cover holds road grime and helps the rust rot set in. The rubber hose that connects to the fuel tank can also perish. The bolts inside the fuel filler need removing, the bolts onto the arch and the hose at the bottom of the bend into the tank.

Ah, Mr Trooper, thanks for that. Do you know whether this rubber hose connecting to the fuel tank is part of the kit if I bought a new filler neck pipe?

My aim is to get under there with the wheel off and give some bits a really good wire brushing and de-greasing. This I hope will let me know where the weeping and/or leak is coming from. Depending on the condition of everything I may just give this a bash myself as it does look like a simple tool job and more so just figdity.

I'll save those pictures for reference mate, thanks

Mark at Import Car Parts is the cheapest you'll find for a new one.

Just to add, I don't think the rubber hose comes with a new one.

I've got a length of fuel grade hose here you can have for the cost of postage, if you want it.

How do slap head

I assume the filler necks fit both our cars mate, so the hose definitely fits? If so I'll take you up on that Micky

Going on what Mr Trooper said, it's the main feed on the filler not the little part where it fits?tha ls for the offer (I rescind the slap head bit)

It's the bit that can't be seen behind the dirt trap in this picture, Andy. If you want it, let me know and I'll dig it out.



I think it's the overflow pipe connection.

Aye, the filler pipes are the same on classics.

If yours is anything like mine, you'll have to drill the retaining screws out behind the filler flap. I used cobalt drill bits, titanium coated ones just weren't up to the job.

Ahh great stuff. Well depending on my findings when I jack the bitch up for a nosey will depict whether I attempt this.

Something's definitely amiss as there was a leak every time I pulled up but less so as the tank emptied to about half way after a day out today. Does point to the filler pipe soooo hopefully it is, and not the tank.

I got a new one fitted by our local friendly Subaru specialist this year and he had a bloody good moan about it. He has a ramp and lots of nice tools to hand, so i don't think it's a nice job to do

Is it worth painting or coating it with something then prior to fitting, to prevent the same rot kicking in?

To be honest, I think once you've replaced these once its going to outlast the car if its a daily driver. I also think that these rust from the inside out anyway.

They rust from the outside, Ross. The plastic cover traps all the dirt and crap causing it to rot over time.

Andy, I lashed a couple of coats of silver Hammerite on my replacement, every little helps.



That was mine when I removed it Andy, the hole wasn't that big though.

It's not a nice job to swap them, especially now the weather is getting worse. You'll spend a lot of time lying under the car, swearing profusely at it.

I guess the cars that are used all year in all weathers might rot outside in, but mine has sat in the garage for 95% of the last 9 years, so I'm pretty sure the condensation build up from the fuel rotted it.

Either way, they're bloody expensive for a bit of metal pipe!

I got a mint one second hand, you have to be quick though as they don't hang about.

Think it took me three attempts to get one.

Easy job, I am the most ham fisted person you could meet and it took me half an hour on the drive lying on my back

I think the £150 quote includes the fuel filler part of the pipe. From memory it comes with that from Subaru.

Does the tank need draining to do this?

I didn't Ollie, but, there was only about a quarter tank of fuel in.
