Question 2001 Bugeye WRX - looking at one tomorrow

Afternoon all.

Tomorrow morning I am heading out on a 220 mile round trip to look at a 85,000 mile Y plate Bugeye WRX.

Apart from the 'usual' things to look out for, is there anything specific to the Bugeye I should be aware of?

Cambelt was changed a few thousand miles ago and car comes with full service history, MOTs etc.

HPI check is all clear (car has had a couple of private plates over the years).

Power steering pumps are made of chocolate, go lock to lock while stationary to check for any whining or notching.
Listen out while on test driver as the lower link arms are prone to knocking.

Out of curiosity what is the asking money for it?

Phase I bug with the aeriel in the a pillar, Blob Scoop, front end changed, different wheels, changed spoiler so had quite a bit done externally.........

Usual stuff for a bug of this age, after all it's an 11 year old car. Bug WRX left the factory severly de-tuned so as to not step on the toes of the UK STi so as long as it's been loooked after mechanically there is nothing specific to look for.

£3,400 is a bit steep LOL

Any more pics?

check the front u subframe for rust ..very common

you can only see the sides of it from looking through the front wheel archs the rest is hiden under the front engine tray underneath the car
it runs accross the front of the car underneath the rad and goes back under passenger and drivers seats each side..

attatched pic shows mine rusted and any where in the red area are very prone to rust.

take a small screwdriver with you and have a poke about.. dont be shy

new subframes are £500 + vat and have to come from japan.

other than that just the usual stuff on any car smoke ,rattles, acciden damage etc

GOOD LUCK

Many thanks for replies and things to look for

Price is on the 'strong money' side but I don't mind spending a few ££s for a good car.

I'll get some more pictures/info tomorrow.

Car is weekend toy type of thing and I like the look of it. Owned 5 x Classics and fancy a change. Fingers crossed all is ok tomorrow.

If car ok I'll see how much movement there is on the price.

I paid £2100 for a 85k miles 51 plate last month. Bog standard, mechanically sound and good overall condition. That was a private sale.

£3400 does seem high for an early bug. Regarding the front subframe yes they do corrode but if it really is in a bad way then you can either a) Remove it and leave it off b) Remove it, repair it and and put it back on c) Get hold of a good secondhand one and replace it. They are simple enough to replace.

With most Imprezas check for clonking suspension.

Does it have any extra/upgraded parts in the engine bay or is it 100% completely stock?

If its rusty, take it off and leave it off, it isnt necessary for handling etc.
You cna pick up good second hand ones for less than 50 quid if you really had to have the extra 16kg lump of metal fitted.
fwiw, I paid that price 3 years ago for the same year.

Good news - bought it.

Offered £3,00 and did deal for £3,200 including 3 month warranty engine and gearbox + 6 months tax - perhaps high price wise (?) but I think worth it as car is in exceptional condition and the previous owner(s) have clearly taken good care of it and it drives superbly (no rattles/strange noises).

MOT was carried out at the end of June with no advisories.

All the old MOTs and comprehensive service history shows the car hasn't wanted for anything.

I will let you know of all that has been done (Prodrive seats ) etc when I get the car home on Friday.

When I started it up the flat four burble was a familiar and wonderful noise.

Chuffed to bits.

PS Thanks to Gary Moulson at Keith Michaels for a great insurance quotation.
