To be honest with ya mate you can get a straight MG ZR on ebay for around 1300 for a descent one, It all depends how much you get it for really, As it will need minimum 4-500 spending on it, Jigging the boot well out, getting the lining to match, Spraying new bumper, vic check etc etc

Is this for the daughter that recently had a baby?
If so, I personally wouldn't let and child/grandchild of mine go in a previously written off car that's had structural damage
As above, dirt cheap to buy anyway unless you literally won it for £10

Nick might be buying trouble unless you know these cars well
problem with the ZR is the head gasket fail. due to using aluminium in the engine. if not looked after can cost big time.
there is a fix kit that cures once and for all but believe these cost over £1k

Mate had one which was written off after a similar accident - It was written off due to a lack of parts available to fix it rather than the damage/cost to repair itself.
assuming it is cat c/d i would check with her insurers to see if they will insure it and if they will what documentation they will require as this can be an issue.
as mentioned above straight cars can be had for little money.

The angle of the tailgate above the rear light doesn't look good, and where the bumper support has gone through the rear bumper also makes it look like it could be a little bit more serious than just a rear bumper, they are also paper thin with a corragated rear panel which will make it a bugger to line up properly.
They are great cars if you get a good one, but the 1.4 rover 25 is the one to go for, like mine, same gearbox and block i think, but don't have the hg problems as much as the bigger variants, i think it's because they are not bored out as much, which is just a presumption on my part.
Mine has been great, 42mpg and very cheap parts, done about 30k miles since purchase now with only a couple of wear and tear parts replaced in the last couple of years, and my wife and son treat it like ****, hence the reason i by cheap runabouts for them to run into the ground.
If you can get it for around the £300 mark then worth a punt, but much more than that and i doubt it's worth it, as like everyone is saying, they can be had for bugger all off ebay.

If they do fail then fitting a multi layered steel head gasket and modified crank ladder will sort it once and for all, along with fitting a remote thermostat kit like they do on the 160 vvc lotus lumps.
Total cost of parts is about £250 and allow another £250 for labour etc.
Obviously if doing the work yourself the costs are somewhat minor really.
I've had 3 ZR's now and tbh i still love them, admittadley (sp) i've fitted the 2.0 turbo engine's to each of them to make them shed loads more fun, but the standard 1.4 k series engines are still quite nippy with their 105 bhp, they're definately a good car to drive and own and cost of general maintenance is very cheap, a full service kit costs about £30 and is a very easy task to undertake yourself should you wanna try.
I'd definately recommend them as a good starter motor tbh, the only issue with them is the insurance is quite high as a lot of chavs are buying them and crashing them, which as Rover went bump the parts were more difficult to source so insurance companies were writing them off rather that repairing them.
