Default Turbo advice?

Hi All,

I wanted to upgrade the turbo on my Impreza Turbo 2000 W reg. Does anyone one know what turbo I should get? I want a drect replacement to make life easier. Would be happy with 280 - 300bph.

I found this on ebay but not sure if it will fit...

i wouldnt buy cheap ebay turbos, buy a 2nd hand vf34, 35 or 43

all get full boost from about 3000-3500rpm and hold boost pretty well

all can achieve 350 bhp and an easy 300 bhp

Interested to know about this myself... how do you check the quality of a second hand turbo... I think mine is showing signs of violating my wallet

Your car's OEM fitment is a TD04L. This is good for 260-290 normally - and still retaining your car's super-quick spool-up! All you need is a EcuTek remap from JGM.

Best to go decat d/p prior to the remap though, to free up breathing and get as much bhp/lb ft/drivability as poss. Just make sure you have/seek out a friendly MOTer...

If you do go decat, then early to mid 280s is on the cards.

he wants one that will do 300 and mapping a td04 with mods will max the turbo out at about 290 very max and in future if he wants more power he will have to change again, bigger turbo he can achieve 300 easy bolt on and map and can run it on low boost if he wants or high boost and achieve near 350bhp with a map and few mods easy and his engine will be running a safe power

No, he mentioned a bracketed power target: 280 to 300 and anywhere in between.

So his existing TD04L will do 280+.

But for sure, if he'd rather have 300+, then a used VF23/24/28/29/30/34/35, etc would be good VFM choices - esp. the younger VF30/34/35...

might aswell buy a bigger bolt on turbo for around the same price bracket and get far more power and wont cause any issues or damage to his engine and gear box

sometimes a td04 can struggle to achieve the 280bhp alot achieve in the 270s on 2 litre turbo and the 2.5 will have alot more torque and bhp on a td04

Sure, but if he'd be happy with <280+ (which, after all, is what he eludes to in his opening post) then a load of £s have been saved on the price of a replacement turbo - and fitting labour (albeit not such a prob if doing the d/p too), So that's why I mentioned it. I'm just giving a relevant answer to his question with respect to spending as little as possible. Pretty much what most people angle for.

A lot of TD04Ls do make 280 odd on a 2.0L - I've prob seen more make that on here than in the 270s. But it's a moot point anyway, as you're not gonna notice the diff. between 270+ and 280+ on the road... Just depends how much the OP would have a 'hang-up' over <=279 (should it make 'only' that).

Thanks so much guys for all your help! So I can get 280 on my standard one? That would do for now, and its defo the TD04 I have, I wasnt sure as I can only find info on the WRX turbo which is a TD04 too. Might consider the VF35's what sort of money are those?

The UK Turbo 2000's differ from the JDM WRX and STi for some MYs.

But AFAYC the UK Turbo 2000's had:-

MY94-96 = TD05H 16g top entry
MY97-00 = TD04L (13g?) front entry.

Before (possibly) spending out on a replacement turbo, first try confirming which one you have (it's unlikely, but a previous member just may have changed it for example -- and may or may not have remapped it, if he did).

You should be able to see the code stamped on the compressor cover... You might need to remove the turbo heatshield, and you may need to fashion a small mirror on a thin bendy bit of wire, and a portable light to get access/see it...

But that said, it should, and almost certainly will be, a TD04L.

There are a couple of rules to modding, first things first:-

1. Get your car health checked by a speciallist (and by speciallist I mean someone who really knows these cars).

2. Don't buy cheap sh1te off ebay, its normally a chinese copy and wont last 10 mins, try someone like Andy F or Harvey who do a selection of decent turbo's, it will cost you more but better than buying twice.

3. You need supporting mods when modifying your car, brakes, intercooler, exhaust, remap, decent fuel pump, maybe injectors, clutch etc, note that the more power you put through your car, the less reliable it will become (gearbox/clutch etc).

4. Take good advice when given, alot of people on here have modified their cars, you need to look at reliability first rather than out and out power, a well setup car with less bhp can be quicker where its needed than one with more bhp and not well setup.

Thanks, thats great advice guys. I am almost certain the turbo has not been modifed. If the standard one is a TD04 then I would like to see what bhp I can get with the mods I have done listed below. I better get a map first to see. I am more about reliability than massive horse power to be honest but would like to see it a bit quicker.

Mods so far without remap:
Blitz Panel filter
Full magnex exhaust including decat
Just fitted a new exedy clutch and light weight flywheel.

Further 'must haves' before remap:-

Uprated fuel pump - Walbro 255 or HRC 290
Fresh sparkies - NGK PFR7B
Fresh OEM fuel filter (unless you know its service history)

as above get the engine serviced so its nice and heathly and running on good oil and plugs then the mods you have now are fine just upgrade the intercooler so the engine can breath easier, walbro fuel pump and an ecutek map should see near or your 280 target

just dont fit any stupid dump valve keep the oem recirculating valve it does the job fine at holding boost and your turbo wont have to make up that lost air again on gear changes

and depending on what injectors your car has 550cc would help with providing that extra fuel the car needs with having extra boost and air/fuel ratio after a map
