Default Sensible turbo upgrade

Hi all,
Thinking of treating myself to a bigger turbo. Ive got a 96 sti, so it has the vf23, but I have upgraded to front mount, induction kit, 3" full decat and has been mapped.(also have fueling sorted) I would like to upgrade to something that means less boost but more torque??
Im currently running at 21psi peak, any suggestions??

Im looking for no more than 340-350 as dont want to replace gaerbox regularly

md321h at 1.2bar would see around 330-340 with good torque and really good spool...........but they do cost!!

Md321h? That's a 400hp turbo, what a waste if the guy wants 350 max.
I would have thought a vf34 or vf35 would have been perfect and a quarter of the price of a 321h.

I'd say a 34 also.
321H is a great turbo but slightly overkill IMO. And as you say, expensive.

Ps why do you want to run less boost, 21psi doesn't sound too bad

Yes but a 34 will need to be doing 1.4-1.5bar to do 350 though and the requirments are lower boost with higher torque.

lower boost + higher torque = a 2.1/2.5 conversion.

Ha ha, want to run less boost with a beter turbo so that I can build a second engine.......
Im looking to go down the 2.1 stroker kit eventually. Im trying to be sensible, but I also know that at the moment, the standard gearbox will break apart at around 370bhp.
As for new or second hand, that depends on the price............ I would have roughly £600 without selling my unit. (keeping money aside for remap ;-) )

You understand that the VF23 is a BIG turbo dont you?
You wont need to replace it with a vf34/35/td05 16g etc as they are all similar in size.

Tony

PS, your engine isnt going to be good for more than what this turbo will give you either, 350bhp is the max I would ever want to run a newish/low mileage engine on, let alone a 15 year old engine....

TonyBurns, I wasnt to sure on size of mine to be honest. Taking the fairly low mileage I have into account, only 63000, I realise a bigger turbo might break it.
So, would it be beneficial for now, to look at manifolds, up pipes??

Really dont want to break it yet............

Yes stick with your P20 housing VF23 and have a chat with Harvey Smith about manifolds/downpipes that would suit your car

Well considering the vf34 is a p18 housing and the vf23 is a p20 housing (higher the number, bigger the housing), its smaller
