Will Subaru need to up the POWER on the next Impreza?
#1
As i always read EVO i have noticed that lots and lots of cars are being released with similar levels of power to the Impreza Turbo.
Not fantastic, sexy cars but ones that a lot of you guys wouldn't want to be beaten by in a little 'game' on the motorway!
ie. (I cant remember exact figures but you get the idea)
New Ford Mondeo ST200? 220bhp
Vauxhall Astra SRI 190bhp
Alfa Romeo GTA 250bhp
Ford Focus RS 220bhp
Honda Civic Type R 200bhp
Light weight 172 coming out
Even the 180bhp Leons, Ibizas can't be far behind now.
There must be pleny more too.
Whereas the Impreza seems to be treading water at 220bhp (ish) since 1993.
I know there are PPPs and aftermarket fettling but do you think for the next Impreza, Subaru will have to rethink the power and bump it up to, say, 250bhp as standard?
I for one think they will have to as when i finally get one i dont
want to be looking over my shoulder for some rep in a hot Mondeo!
I don't think the Impreza will be the same performance icon it was 5 years ago if they don't.
Discuss.......

Kosy!!!!
Long time no see!!! Are you going to KH on the 3rd May??? Mail me........
Get back in with the muppets too
RE you above postings..........buy Japanese Imprezas, more power
I hope Subaru do increase the power of the UK, but don't forget the rise in insurance may be too much for some people to tolerate.

To be fair, the top of the range Impreza is now the STI with over 260 bhp as standard. The forthcoming PPP will probably push that to more like 300 bhp, which would be plenty for me
Subaru does, of course, have 2.5 and 3 litre engines for STI to play with too...

Don't know is this is right but isn't there a limit on EEC or UK regulations limiting the top end power on a car if it's not an import? Is it around 280BHP.
Thought 5th Gear said something about it last night when dealing with the STi and EVO.

Its not strictly speaking a limit, but a gentelman's agreement between the manufacturers and the government to avoid any draconian laws limiting the power being passed. Everyone knows that standard R34 GTR Skylines have over 280ps, but they factory don't claim that, to keep within the agreement.
Similar to the German manufacturers and their 155mph restriction, that's why Porsche can ignore it, as its not law.

I was thinking about something similar the other day. My dad had a Saab 900T16S which was generally reckoned to be 'a powerful car'. IIRC the catted ones had 165bhp, the 'big-turbo' ones 175bhp and the very last ones (Rubies) had 185bhp. Now you can get 'hot hatches' with similar power figures (Clio 172, 306 GTi-6, Xsara VTS, Leon 20VT) -- it seems 180bhp is unexceptional. An old Saab also weighed just over 1200kg and was as long as a Transit -- I wonder how much the modern bunch of 180bhp hatches weigh?

You mention the Scoobies bhp but (maybe i'm wrong) isn't it all about torque?
AFAIK, the standard torque on a new WRX is 292Nm before you go anywhere near the PPP.
The Alfa, as stated, has 220bhp as standard the same as the Scoob but only delivers 196Nm of torque.
Civic TypeR - 200bhp - 145Nm
But maybe i've got it all wrong.....

There's no specific limit here - just ask TVR (just about every model has 350bhp+), BMW (the 400bhp M5), Audi (the 370bhp RS4), Jaguar (S-type R) to name but a few.
As far as I'm aware there's an agreement amongst Japanese manufacturers to limit their quoted figures to 280bhp, but as any Skyline owner will know, liberating more power borders on being trivial.
Andy.

Kosy,
To help you get it back on track: Whilst many of these cars that are similar power to the subaru, they all seem to be much slower on the quoted 0-60 figures - which is a prime indicator for many buyers and admirers. Not sure why this is, 4WD helps with traction, but it ain't the lightest car on the track. Compare it, say, with a TT, which is lighter, more power, 4WD, less drag, wider gear ratios, yet it is almost a second slower on the quoted 0-60 figures - spooky, eh!

i bet drivers of ALL of the above cars dont get kids and even adults coming up and saying 'hey nice cars mister!'
for me its not just the power, its the car that does it!
even after a few months of ownership i still get a thrill just looking back after parking her.

I bought my scoob for the handling ability, not straight-line power.
There have already been a number of discussions on here re Saabs (Trouser etc), Audi S3s, Cossies, BMWs,... the list goes on.
Many of them will match a scoob in a straight line. That's not what I'm after. You want that, go buy a V8 Corvette. The scoob is/was famous for its handling and its grin factor. What other cars give you that for the money? The list gets a lot shorter then...
