To Dealership or not to Dealership??
Ok have just gotten a WRX STi, has only done 18,000 odd miles on a 54 plate, going by the MOT cert its only done just under 1000 miles in the last 2 years. But hasnt been serivce since 2007, and 3 services pervious to that all stamped in the book....im guess hasnt been serviced in a while as the useage didnt warranty it and so i am going to get it service as it probably needs an oil change etc. Because of this is it worth me going to a dealership or just find a local garage to carry out the service as im guess any value added to the car in using dealership has pretty much been lost now as it hasnt had a service for a while?? Views please??

From what i've found out, as long as you go to a registered garage who can stamp your book and has'nt been slagged of on watchdog of the internet and use genuine service parts then it's good enough. Most people realise that main dealers offer nothing more than any other garage. Their only advantage can be manufactors assistance with fault finding. Other than that your paying a premium for labour. I just buy my service parts from the dealer and stick the reciept in with the bills for servicing to show i've had the right bits

service is milage or time. so no anual service = no buy for me, so persoanly i'd walk away.

In all fairness, on a standard car you can't really go wrong with a dealer service, if you're not going to use a main dealer you're going to want to use someone that specialise in performance Japanese vehicles or at least has experience of working on Impreza's.
Joe Bloggs down the back alley that services your Nan's shopping car every year probably isn't going to know what to look out for on a Scooby

Ok have just phoned Slip End Garage in Luton (nearest dealership to me) told him my situation, and asked me has the timing belt been done, i couldnt see any evidence of this and was told the timing belt are usually change around 5 years! The last service carried out on the car was the 20,000 mile service (the car has done 18,400) so the next service in the book is the 30,000 service. What does the 30,000 service consist of?, was quoted 400 odd quid for the service and belts does this seem right?

Cambelt will need doing in whatever service you have done next as it is over 5 yrs old. As mentioned above always try to take it to a specialist if there's one local to you. They're half the price but have double the experience. Main dealers are better than any old local garage though. Car should always be serviced annually or every 10k miles which ever comes first.. doesn't matter how little the car is used.

Yeah well now i have the car it will always be serviced annually. I dont think theres an specialist near me in bedford, where would the nearest be?? Hear people mention scoobyclinic but not sure where that is?

So basically it was serviced on time for the first three years and since then it's done very little mileage and not been serviced in the last four years?? Without wanting to put a dampener on things I personally would have walked away from that car. As has been said, fluids, hoses etc all degrade and four years is a long time.
However, preaching now won't change things Best thing to do is check what Scooby specialists are close to you, ring them and get quotes to do a service to include everything. All fluids, belts etc etc. Leave no stone unturned

Specialist would be the way to go. Youve got no warranty and lost the value in the full dealer history so dont waist money at a dealers. You will prob get a better job at a specialist anyway.

My car had a full main dealer history. It was worthless. I range them before I purchased it and was assured it had been well looked after, no expense spared etc etc. It had the following problems;
Gearbox linkage(s) + bushes corroded (Box out to correct)
Failing Clutch
Front Pads worn to limits and inner pads seized
Discs knackered
Brembo bleed nipples seized
And that's not all of it........ Main dealers are not know as 'stealers' for nothing...... It cost over £2k to correct.

As previously suggested, find a recommended specialist. Get it booked in for a cambelt change and full service. That's engine oil and filter, diff oil, coolant, gearbox oil, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, pollen filter. Budget around £700 at a specialist using quality parts and fluids. Over £1k at a specialist I'd suggest. The plugs and fluids are at best, at least 4 years old and wel past their best, based on their age .

I think im going to be taking it to Scoobyworks, have also looked at scoobyclinic & scoobymaina, but scoobyworks is near to me and the prices seem a bit better. I'll book it in for a 50k (cam belt) service at £270 +VAT which seems reasonable, and also ask for the sparks to be replaced aswell

Westaways in Northampton where asking £800 odd for the same service!!!!!!
I may also get them to stick it on the rolling road to see what its outputting, hopefully at only 18000 miles it still should be outputting the 305 PPP BHP!!

Yeah does say 'Camshaft belt (price exc. tensioner if required) ' but at only 18000 miles it might not require tensioner..............................hopefully. To be fair ive set myself up for a bill of £500 so anything less ill be happy with

I'd have walked away!
Cambelt is every 50K or 5 years (from memory), has it been done? also due a major service, ancillary belts and fluids by the sounds of it all need doing at 60K or 5 years.
sounds like it needs a good going over, i'd ask in the/your regional section for a good local independent and get them to have a look.

I'd save the money from the RR to get if fully serviced, that's everything serviced, not just the oil , cambelt and plugs. Once you know its okay, then put it on the rollers

Took my car to Scoobyclinic today, good set of guys down there! Had the 50k service carried out and Fuel Filter replaced. None of the tensioners needed replacing so total cost of £370 took about 4 hrs .
Everything was inspected that would have been inspected/replaced in the 30k service bar the fuel filter so that why i requsted that to be changed. Glad that there was no major problems with the car and everything was in good order and no major parts needed replacing which to be fair was what i was expecting due to the low mileage!! Happy with the price so all set for the year now...bar MOT in october
