Worried about oil loss
Hi guys need some advice. I have a my02 bug Sti the engine went pop and got it rebuilt by API and got forged pistons and crank so to make sure the engine was tip top I got dynmix to map it. I have had it serviced 3 times by Subaru and in total it has only covered over 5k miles. But the last 2 times if has been serviced I have noticed the oil is going really quick I asked the guy at subaru is this normal and he said yes as the car has been mapped and have forged parts the car will drink more oil but I have gone through all the oil the put in the car when it was last serviced and I have topped it up with 2l more and I have only covered 1680 miles and the dipstick is showing below low mark and I have checked on a level surface to make sure. So is this normal or not?

Forged engines do tend to use more oil. Have a word with one of the guys at API, they have a great reputation for looking after customers and providing helpful advice. Just make sure you check your oil more regularly and use the recommended viscosity oil for your forged engine.

As above check more regular as you really dont want ti be driving on low mark or will be a big end failure again. check every week or two and write down ml put in vrs mileage dond and type of driving. handy record to keep.

Ok thanks fir the advice does anyone know what oil is the best to top up with until I can get it looked at? Is there a chance that my piston seals are leaking? Also how much oil should my car go through?

Speak with David at A.p.i mate, they will advise you on what to do as it was them who built it and they are experts. Just out of curiousity how exactly are you checking oil ie- when warmed up or from stone cold??
Just to add, the amount of oil between full and low on the dipstick is roughly half-3qtrs of a litre so it depends how many miles it has done since the last oil change as to if it's using oil excessively. Plus oil will pass the pistons when cold and if you are not allowing enough time to warm up before some spirited driving then this will aid oil loss.

Thank you for the replys I got the engine rebuilt last year by API so it's been almost a year ago. Well I check the oil when it's stone cold and I just checked it now after a drive and it's still showing below the low mark. And I believe Subaru uses what API recommend, but I will give David a call 2moz and ask him. And when I last had it serviced it has only covered 1700 miles as of todays driving.

When you check it stone cold remove dip stick and wait 10mins before putting the stick back in to get a reading, this way you allow the oil to settle and you will get a more accurate reading.

Very small mileage put up on that car I wonder have you got a good seal on the rings, I have about 7000km on my forged engine now and uses hardly any oil Ive have to top up maybe 200ml in the last 5000km, its due another oil change now soon. Mine did use a bit for the first 2000km but seems to be fine now.
I did run the engine in up mountains roads in varying gears and loads to get it to seal the rings good and proper.
From cold ,I let it idle for about 30 secs before driving off and not about 3k rpm for the first 10-15mins just to allow the pistons to expand so she doesnt have any oil getting past the rings and being burnt.Just the way I do it , others will have different ways.
Could there be a chance you might be over filling it?

Hmm.
My forged 2.5 Engine Tuner built li
P has just passed 1,200 miles now. It smelt very oily to start with but varied running in has reduced that to nothing now. Btw I'm on mineral oil as recommended by Alan. I won't change to semi synth until 2,500 miles then fully synth after the next scheduled change. Good oil too soon cN glaze the bores and your engine does sound like it's not bedded in right.
Jokes aside, it can be fixed, but the engine will have to come out again....budget that up against the costs of oil.

Ok well i ran the engine in really carefully and followed API instructions to the T and I took it back there for them to do the second oil change. And since then I have had it serviced at Subaru using shell oil. I do let her warm up before I put my foot down as I go by the defi oil temp and once that hits above 85c that's when I know I can put my foot down, is that the right temp? Also does anyone know how much this would cost if the engine does need to come out again and what they would have to do?

API recommends 10W40 or 10W50 OR 10W50 or 15W50 Fully or semi synthetic for its engines. 5W anything in a Subaru turbo is not recommended by us. Neither is anything 0W
