JPN spec STI MY2001 RON question ?
#1
Hey guys,
I have posted a topic like this before but wanted to see if it had been clarified at all since that post.
Some seemed to have thought that running a MY2001 JPN spec STI on 97 - 98 RON gas was ok and no engine damage would occur as 97 - 98 RON was within its tolerance. (In this case I am talking no octane booster, just plain old gas in the tank).
Others said that should at least use an octane booster if going to run 97 - 98 RON gas. (so in this case it should bring the 97 - 98 RON gas up to 100 RON).
So once again, thoughts on this please ??
Dave T-S, you run on 97 - 98 RON only on your JPN spec or do you add octane booster ?
I am not cheap, but we can't get Millers or NF here so octane booster is not an option.
Finally anyone know where I can get a knock sensor from and if I can use any old knock sensor or do I have to get one specially designed for the Scoob ?
Cheers guys,
Ray

They are built for 100 RON they can retard a little for lower spec fuel. The UK version is supposely tuned to run on UK fuel. I run my Japanese spec car on Optimax and Millers which hopefully should be knocking (no pun intended ) on the door of 99.5-100 RON. I would put the best fuel you can get in it. I know a lot of owners only put in OB on track days but I run all the time. You will be down on power if you run on lower quality fuel just like normal UK spec cars running on NUL 95 RON.
cheers

Chaps,
I don't know where this 100RON fuel in Japan idea comes from (and I know I always thought they had 100RON fuel), but a Japanese guy I know (who is seriously into tuning cars) says that they have 98RON pump fuel in Japan and is puzzled why we all think they have 100RON.
Now I'm not saying he's right but he's lived there after all (and I don't know anyone else who has), knows his stuff and so his opinion has to count for something.
Anybody?????
Matt

Sorry for the delay in replying. Mine is actually a UK spec not JDM so is set up to run on 98 octane or even 95 at a pinch.
You really need to talk to Bretman or one of the Jap spec car owners. You can find Bretman's email address on one of the posts on the boost spike thread in Drivetrain.
Sorry I can't answer the question
As for a knock sensor, try the KnockLink from Link Electrosystems in New Zealand (they have a website if you do a search).

Subaru New Zealand sell the STi as an official dealer import, which is what I have, so its actually NZ spec.
As far as I know it is JDM spec with some cosmetic changes. (e.g. grille vents) - Interesting thing is that on the petrol cap it says: "Use at least 95 RON for best performance". The dealer recommends 98, however.
I use exclusively 98 and no Octane booster without any problems.

Just had a quick flash round the web and found these links which seem to suggest a standard Japanese fuel 98 and a super plus fuel 100 RON. They all speak of this 100 RON fuel.

My guess is that there are 2 fuels a lower 98 and 100. I am sure I heard I romour of 102 octane fuel as well but I may be wrong.

I guess it depends on whether, in Japan, they recommend running the car on their version of super or their version of normal unleaded petrol. I believe these are 100 and 98 ron respectively. People have latched onto the fact you can get 100 ron in Japan at the pumps and assumed that all Jap spec cars are supposed to run on this...
