Actually was referring to what usually follows as the bickering commences about the grade required usually supported by the such facts as "my brother in law knows a bloke who mows tha grass at Silverstone and he says that the best oil is Penisoil 50w160"
Well I knew a bloke once who actually RTFM and used that info to make his own descision

just my 2p worth but, the confusion starts for a lot of people when the information from subaru japan is 10/40 whereas subaru uk states 5/30. now obviously most would think go with whatever the EFFIN MANUAL states , but, most people have had the contradictory information that "the oil specified by subaru uk is too thin, and will only end up leaking through the seal etc." and to back this up " subaru japan recommend 10/40, and after all they build them! the only benefit to the 5/30 is to withstand lower temps, which, in reality, our country will never plummet that low anyhow, so use the 10/40"
now i have had experience with both types of oil, and in all honesty dont see a great deal of diffrence between the 2, however, my purpose for trying a diffrent grade of oil was to see if my oil consumption could be reduced by using a thicker viscosity, as mine is one of the unfortunate "oil drinkers" (another one for the search bar). my findings are that in my opinion the 5/30 needs topping up less often although not by a great deal! my opinion is just use the 5/30 anyway. still, not such a daft Q as some would make you believe, take no notice.

There's an idea for a pointless poll.
What colour is your engine oil when new
Red
brown
green
who gives a toss
etc.
etc.
Or maybe
What makes you decide which oil to use
Colour
Smell
Advice from bloke at cemetry who swears by Brand A in all things petrol powered
Read it on the internet
Used what the handbook or expert advises
I could poll ***** myself to 5000 posts in no time
What shade of red is yours, Shaun ?

Iain...... forgot to mention its a 10/50 red colour
Shame the Subaru coolant colour is green, my old Toyota MR2 had red coolant (4life), if Subaru had red coolant then that's a nice piece of colour co-ordination
