Right so on the m6 today doing 60 in the variable speed strech between walsall and cannock on the way home when the car in front flicked up a stone that hit the windscreen and put big nasty crack in it. Get home and ring the insurance company who pass me on to autoglass to arrange a replacement for wednesday. good job i dont need the car the till friday. so my questions are:

1. has anyone had any problems with a replacement windscreen
2. my original has the vin plate etched on it in a dot format, where can i get this done on the replacement. I belive it was a standard thing on a 2003 sti.

You can still drive the car mate, the screen will not cave in on you. Make sure the trim around the screen is replaced with a new one. You may find the new screen creaks for a few days after, this is just the new screen settling in and the glue fully hardening. Scoobys are easy to do shouldn,t take more than an hour.

I would keep an eye on them whilst cutting out old one make sure the paint doesn't get cut through anywhere then covered by the trim, but they should be able to etch the screen as well, although you might have to drive to the depot

And you don't HAVE to have it done by Autoglass.

Mine was replaced and leaked afterwards, they had to do it again.

Also check for any damage when they're done. My front wing was dented by someone leaning their knee on it whilst reaching across, and they also cut through a wire for my alarm sensors which runs across the top of the windscreen. Perhaps an easy mistake to make whilst cutting out the old window, but when they found they'd done it, they stuffed the wires back up in the hope that i wouldnt notice. Unfortunately for them as i drove away they fell out and hung down..
they did get it all sorted after some words though..

A new trim is not nessasery I'm an ex windscreen fitter and if anything the new ones look worse as they are rolled up when new and there for out of shape, auto glass use a device called an Ezi-wire and are ban due to Heath and safty from using snap knifes. Alarm wires and hands free microphones are a fitter nightmare they are from time to time caught while removing and to be fair it's the people who install them that are at fault as they litteraly 'bung' them in, I always used to re locate the wiring so it's out the way for next time lol. Watching a fitter is fine but please don't sit there distracting him as that when accidents happen also don't start picking bits up and start cleaning things very inappropriate.

Sorry to moan but have been there before. Shame I left was good at my job was 'cracking' get it boom boom

i had to help the bloke who did my rear screen as they sent him out to do it when it was really a 2man job :/

the glass on the newage seems to fit under the lip of the boot lid
he said something about taking it off to make sure he could fit it easier

well it was dark, so no :P
heh nah wasnt too bad, but the last clips on the plastic runner strips either side of the window werent fully down
got him to come back and adjust them so its alot better now
although they should have really taken the glass out again, i didnt fancy leaving my car at they're depot over night!
